Map Dialog Box

You can modify properties for the Map widget using the Map dialog box, such as whether to display image markers or bubble markers in the widget, or whether you want to provide geographic information for map locations using attributes or attribute forms. For detailed steps to design a Map widget for display on an iPhone, iPad, or Android with MicroStrategy Mobile, see the Designing Reports and Documents for iOS and Android Devices chapter in the MicroStrategy Mobile Administration Help.

You can display multiple datasets in the same Map widget. This allows you to overlay different information or to have different marker styles, such as bubbles and pointers, in the same map. A tab is displayed in the Map Properties dialog box for each dataset that you add to the Map widget. You configure each dataset separately, using the options described below.

To add another dataset, click the plus sign (+) at the top of the interface. A window displays the available datasets on the document. Select the dataset to add to the Map widget, and click OK. A new tab is added to the interface for this dataset.

To access the Map dialog box

  1. In Design Mode or Editable Mode, right-click the Map widget and select Properties and Formatting.
  2. From the left, select Widget.
  3. Click the Widget Properties button Widget Properties button.

The following options are available:

Note the following:

  • If the Map Properties dialog box does not contain options such as Use as a Path on the Map, Select Info Window Style, and Affinity Line Options, your Map widget supports using bubble markers or image markers to display data.
  • The options available may vary depending on the display mode that you select, whether you have chosen to provide geographic data using attributes or attribute forms, and so on.
  • Marker Style/Mode: The options in the Marker Style/Mode section allow you to specify display mode options for map markers in the widget, such as whether to display image markers or bubble markers.
    • Use Image Markers: Select this option to use images to mark locations on the map. From the drop-down list, select the image you want to display as map markers in the widget.
    • Use Bubble Markers: Select this option to use bubble markers to mark locations on the map. The bubbles can be automatically sized and displayed based on the value of a metric.
    • Density Maps: Select this option to have Web automatically color areas on the map based on metric values or the concentration of locations of interest in each area. From the drop-down list, select the color theme to use to automatically color areas on the map.
    • Use as a Path on the Map: Select this option to display map markers as points on a path displayed on the map. The line used to represent the path is displayed as thicker for larger metric values and thinner for smaller metric values.
      • Path Color: Select the color of the line to use to display the map path.
    • Negative Values are Represented As: Determine how to size bubble markers representing negative metric values. This option is available if the Use Bubble Markers option is selected. The options are:
      • Absolute Numbers (default): Use the absolute value of the metric to size the bubble marker. A bubble representing a metric value of -2,500 will be displayed as the same size as a bubble representing 2,500.
      • Bubbles Sized at 7 Pixels: Display bubble markers representing negative metric values as bubbles with a size of 7 pixels.
    • Apply color formatting to the map: Determine whether to apply threshold formatting to image markers or bubble markers in the widget. If you use static images as map markers in the Map widget, you can choose to replace the static image with a different image based on the value of a metric. To do so, you must define an image-based threshold. If you display locations in the widget using bubble markers, you can choose to override the default color of the bubble markers by defining a threshold to change the color of data displayed in the widget.
  • Select Location: The options in the Select Location section allow you to determine whether to use attributes or attribute forms to provide the location information for map markers in the widget.
    • Use Attribute or Form: You can choose to provide the location information for map markers using attributes or attribute forms. The options are:
      • Use Attribute: Select this option to display map markers in the widget using attributes containing the location information for each marker.
      • Use Attribute Form: Select this option to display map markers in the widget by providing the location in the attribute forms of an attribute.
    • Select Data Type: Determine whether to provide the location information for each map marker as a separate latitude and longitude value, or as a spatial point. The options are:
      • Latitude/Longitude: Select this option to provide the location information for each map marker using a separate latitude and longitude.
      • Point: Select this option to provide the location information for map markers as a spatial point.
    • Select Attribute: Select the attribute that contains the attribute forms you want to use to provide the location of the map markers.
    • Select Latitude: Select the attribute or attribute form you want to use to provide the latitude of map markers in the widget.
    • Select Longitude: Select the attribute or attribute form you want to use to provide the longitude of map markers in the widget.
    • Select Point: Select the attribute or attribute form you want to use to provide the location of map markers as a point.
    • Selection Display Attribute/Form: Specify the attribute or attribute form used to display data in the Information Window when the user selects locations in the widget.
    • For repeated rows, display only one marker for same location: By default, if multiple locations in the widget have the same latitude and longitude, a separate map marker is displayed for each location. For example, if several different stores are located in the same building, you can select this checkbox to display a single map marker for all of the stores in the building. When the user taps the map marker on the mobile device, information for each location at the selected latitude and longitude is displayed.
  • Select Info Window Style (Mobile Only): You can select options to customize the Information Window displayed when a user selects a location in the widget.
    • Display Info Window from Document Layout: Select this checkbox to define a layout in the document to use as a custom Information Window. For steps to define an Information Window, see the Designing Reports and Documents for iOS and Android Devices chapter in the MicroStrategy Mobile Administration Help.
  • Affinity Line Options: You can use the options in the Affinity Line Options section to display lines between map markers in the widget, to represent the relationships between locations on the map. This option is available for Map widgets displayed in documents. For detailed steps to display lines between map markers, see the Designing Reports and Documents for iOS and Android Devices chapter in the MicroStrategy Mobile Administration Help.
    • Select Lookup Attribute: If you provided the location of each map marker in the widget using attributes, select the lookup attribute from the drop-down list. The lookup attribute is the first attribute on the rows of the Grid/Graph used to display the lines in the widget, and must provide a single attribute form containing the ID of the starting location for each line.
    • Display Affinity Lines/Arcs: Select this option to enable the display of lines between map markers to demonstrate the relationships between locations on the map.
    • Select Affinity Data: Select the Grid/Graph you want to use to display lines in the widget.
    • Draw Arcs/Lines: Select whether to display the lines as curved or straight. The options are:
      • Arcs: Select this option to display the lines as curved.
      • Lines: Select this option to display the lines as straight.
    • Maximum Line Thickness: Select the maximum thickness that can be used to display lines in the widget. The thickness of each line is automatically determined based on the value of the first metric on the new Grid/Graph's rows. You can specify a maximum thickness of 8. The default value is 5.
  • General Map Properties: Select display properties such as the display theme to use to display the map and whether to display the map toolbar in the widget.
    • Default View: Specify the display theme to use to display the widget. For example, you can display the map as a satellite image, a map with topographical details, and so on.
    • Redraw Behavior on Selector Action: Specify how to display the widget when the user selects items in the widget.
      • Keep the Current Zoom: Select this option to maintain the widget's current level of magnification.
      • Refit the Content: Select this option to refit the contents of the widget to the selected area.
    • Map Elements Visibility Options: Determine which display options, such as the map toolbar, to include in the widget. The options are:
      • Map toolbar: Select this option to display the map toolbar at the top of the widget. The map toolbar contains options to select areas in the widget, zoom in and out of the widget, and so on. This option is selected by default.
      • Map view options: Select this option to allow the user to select which display theme to use to display the map. This option is selected by default.
      • Zoom bar (Web only): Select this option to display a slider that allows the user to zoom in and out of the map. This option is selected by default.
      • Selection list bucket (Mobile only): Select this option to allow the user to view a list of areas they have selected in the widget. This option is selected by default.
