MicroStrategy ONE

Properties dialog box: Widget tab

This tab is available only if the selected control is a Grid/Graph or selector.

The properties in the Widget tab specify whether the selected control is displayed as a widget, such as a gauge, time series slider, or drilling bubbles. They also determine how the control is displayed in MicroStrategy Web modes, PDF View in MicroStrategy Developer, when exported to PDF and Excel, and when displayed on a mobile device with MicroStrategy Mobile.

The Widget tab includes the following:

Widget selection

  • Widgets: For Grid/Graphs, widgets are interactive Flash-only graphs that dynamically update when you select a new set of data to view. For selectors, you can overwrite the rendering of the selector with a custom widget selector style that you created; for more information on custom widgets, see the MicroStrategy Developer Library (MSDL) provided with MicroStrategy SDK.

If you select None in this field, the remaining Widget selection options are unavailable.

Point to one of the following categories to display and select a widget of that type:

    • Flash: Widgets that can be viewed in Flash Mode.

    • DHTML: Widgets that can be viewed in Interactive Mode, Express Mode, and Flash Mode.

    • iPhone/iPad: Widgets that can be viewed on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

The Grid/Graph that you define as a widget must follow the data and template requirements for that type of widget. For example, a Gauge widget requires one attribute on its widget template's rows and one attribute on the columns. Therefore, any Grid/Graph you to turn into a widget must have the same objects on its template. If it does not, the Grid/Graph is not displayed correctly as a widget in Flash Mode. These requirements are detailed in the help topic for each type of widget.

    • Alternative Display: Available only for Grid/Graphs. Determines how the widget is rendered in MicroStrategy Developer views and MicroStrategy Web modes, and when exported to PDF and Excel. For more information on specifying how widgets can be displayed, see Determining how widgets are displayed. You can choose:

    • Show grid or graph to display the Grid/Graph to which the widget is attached.

    • Show placeholder to display an empty Grid/Graph placeholder instead of the widget. The container of the Grid/Graph is shown, with border and background formatting. In Interactive Mode and Express Mode in MicroStrategy Web, the following message is displayed within the container: "Flash Widgets cannot be rendered in this display."

    • Hide grid or graph to hide the widget and display nothing.

The table lists MicroStrategy Developer views and MicroStrategy modes in the Display Widget In column. The Will Render As column indicates how the widget is displayed in each view/mode. In general, to display the widget as a widget in a particular view/mode, select the check box for that view/mode. To use the Alternative Display setting instead, clear the check box for that view/mode. As you make changes, the Will Render As column updates.

  • Flash: Applies to Flash Mode in MicroStrategy Web, Flash View in MicroStrategy Developer, and exporting to Flash. (The Flash check box is not available for widgets for mobile devices and SDK widgets, which are always displayed as Grid/Graphs in Flash.)

To display the widget as a widget, select the check box.

To display the widget as a Grid/Graph, clear the check box. (Flash does not use the Alternative Displaysetting.)

  • Android: Applies to widgets displayed on an Android device that has the MicroStrategy Mobile application. (The Android check box is available only for Android widgets; all other widgets are displayed as Grid/Graphs on iPads.)

  • iPhone: Applies to widgets displayed on an iPhone that has the MicroStrategy Mobile application. (The iPhone check box is available only for iPhone widgets; all other widgets are displayed as Grid/Graphs on the iPhone.)

To display the widget as a widget, select the check box.

To display the widget as a Grid/Graph, clear the check box. (iPhone does not use the Alternative Displaysetting.)

  • iPad: Applies to widgets displayed on an iPad that has the MicroStrategy Mobile application. (The iPad check box is available only for iPad widgets; all other widgets are displayed as Grid/Graphs on iPads.)

For examples of widgets displayed on mobile devices, see Widgets for mobile devices. For more detailed information about widgets for mobile devices, including procedures to create them, see the MicroStrategy Mobile Analysis Help.

  • DHTML: Applies to Interactive Mode and Express Mode in MicroStrategy Web. (The DHTML check box is not available for iPhone widgets, Cylinder widgets, Interactive Stacked Graph widgets, Thermometer widgets, and Time Series Slider widgets. These widgets are displayed according to the Alternative Display setting.)

To display the widget as a widget, select the check box.

To display the widget according to the Alternative Displaysetting, clear the check box.

  • PDF: Applies to PDF View and HTML View in MicroStrategy Developer, and exporting to PDF. All widgets are displayed according to the Alternative Display setting; the PDF check box is not available.

  • Excel: Applies to exporting to Microsoft Excel. All widgets are displayed according to the Alternative Display setting; the Excel check box is not available.

  • In Design View in MicroStrategy Developer and Design Mode in MicroStrategy Web, widgets are always displayed as empty Grid/Graphs. In Editable Mode in Web, widgets are always displayed as Grid/Graphs.

  • This table is unavailable for custom widgets, which are created in the MicroStrategy SDK product, or if custom visualizations have been disabled. For more information and instructions, see the MicroStrategy Developer Library (MSDL), part of the MicroStrategy SDK product.

  • Secondary Data Providers

Available only for a custom widget that has multiple data providers, which allow users to select more than one data provider for the widget. If you are designing a document using a custom widget and this property is available, contact your customization specialist for information on how to use their custom implementation.

With the MicroStrategy SDK, you can access additional MicroStrategy widgets, add third-party widgets, and create and use custom widgets. For more information and instructions, see the MicroStrategy Developer Library (MSDL), part of the MicroStrategy SDK product. You can also download widgets from the MicroStrategy Widget download site at https://resource.microstrategy.com/Support.
