Format Panel for Heat Map Visualizations

Once you add a heat map visualization to a dashboard, you can format it.

Access

  1. Open an existing dashboard that contains a heat map visualization.
  2. Select the entire visualization or just the area you want to format.
  3. The Editor, Filter, and Format panels are stacked together by default. Click Format to open it.

    • If the Format panel is not available, from the View menu, select Editor Panel to display all three panels. Click Format to open the Format panel.

Visualization Options

Layout: Expand to determine how to size or position rectangles:

  • Select one of the following layout options:
    • Keep readability, not element order (default): Size the rectangles in the heat map visualization to make them easy-to-read.
    • Balance readability and element order: Size and position the rectangles to make them easy-to-read, while still attempting to display them in the same order in which they appear in the Editor panel.
    • Keep element order, not readability: Position the rectangles in the heat map visualization in the same order in which they appear in the Editor panel.
  • Header Position: Select whether the rectangle headers display on Top (default) or in the Center.

Data Labels Disable or enable labeling each rectangle with the name of the attribute element that it represents. If enabled, you can select to:

  • Size Proportionally to display the rectangle labels with the size of each label reflecting the size of the rectangle. Rectangles with large values appear with larger labels than rectangles with small values.

  • Show Metric Values to display the metric value for each rectangle.

Legend Enable this option to display a legend explaining the color and size ranges on the heat map.

Text and Form

From the drop-down list, select whether to format the:

  • Data Labels and Shapes:

    • From the drop-down list, select whether to format the Headers, Labels, or All text.

    • Format the Font of the text.

    • For Labels, you can choose to Size Proportionally.

    • Header Fill: Available if headers display on top. If the headers are positioned in the center of the rectangles, the headers do not use a separate background color.

    • Marker Fill: Available if the rectangles are colored automatically based on the value of a metric or values in an attribute.

      • If the heat map's rectangles are colored by metric values , click Select Color Ranges to modify thresholds on the Quick Thresholds Editor. Enter the opacity of the colors in the second field. The higher the percentage, the more opaque the rectangle.

      • If the heat map's rectangles are colored by attribute values, Workstation automatically selects the colors for each attribute value. You can change them. From the Marker Fill drop-down list, select a specific marker or All markers, then select the fill color.

Place an attribute in the Color By area of the Editor panel to color rectangles by attribute values. Place a metric in the Color By area of the Editor panel to color rectangles by metric values.

  • Legend: Format the font and fill of the legend.

Title and Container

Select options for the title bar, fill, and border of the visualization container.

  • Beginning in Strategy One (September 2025), you can adjust the Radius of rounded corners for the container.

    • Use a number between 0 and 40.

    • If the current Padding is less than 50% of the updated Radius, Padding automatically increases to match 50% of the new Radius.
