Format Panel for Geospatial Service Visualizations

Once you add a geospatial service visualization to a dashboard, you can format it.

Access

  1. Open an existing dashboard that contains a geospatial service visualization.
  2. Select the entire visualization or just the area you want to format.
  3. The Editor, Filter, and Format panels are stacked together by default. Click Format to open it.

    • If the Format panel is not available, from the View menu, select Editor Panel to display all three panels. Click Format to open the Format panel.

  4. Select one of the following tabs on the Format panel:

Visualization Options

Map Layout Contains general formatting options for the map's display, such as the display theme, map type, clustering, and so on. The following options are available:

  • Map Style: Select the display theme to use when showing the map (that is, Basic, Satellite, and so on).

  • Map labels: Display or hide map labels, which are geographic names such as countries and cities. If map labels display, you can set the following:

    • Bring map labels to front to display map labels on top of layers.

    • Language: Select the language for map labels. Select Local to view the local language for a country. For example, map labels within the country of Japan appear in Japanese, even if your machine is set to English. You can also choose your machine language + Local to view map labels in both languages.

  • Show Toolbar: Select the check box to display a toolbar with basic formatting options on the map. End users can use the toolbar to zoom in and out, change the map style, show and hide the legend, and more.

  • Geo unit: Select the geographical unit of kilometers or miles.

Zoom Behavior Determine whether to refit the map area when you select map locations. Select Dynamic to zoom in and refit the contents of the visualization to best display the selected locations on the map. Select Static to keep the current level of magnification when you select locations on the map.

  • Remember zoom level: (Available when the Zoom behavior is set to Static. Select this check box to maintain the current level of magnification.

  • Freeze pan and zoom: Select this option to prevent panning, zooming, tilting, and rotating on the map.

  • Zoom through layers: (Available when the map contains more than one layer) Select this check box to define the zoom level for each layer using the sliders, ranging from World to Street. Right-click a slider thumb and select whether to exclude or include layers. Hover over a thumb to view the zoom level. Adjust the default zoom level of the map using the slide ruler. The legend updates accordingly.

Your map has three layers. The first, bottom layer, contains map markers for cities throughout the world. The second layer contains areas for states or municipalities within a country. The third, top layer, contains areas for countries. You can zoom in past country areas, to view only state areas, and then finally view only cities with map markers.

Data Points Select options for displaying your data points using markers, bubbles, or areas. If the map contains multiple layers, you can format each layer individually by selecting it from the drop-down list.

  • Type: Select the map type:

    • Marker: Displays a marker for each location in your data. You can color the markers by the values of a metric. Select the Shape of the marker from the drop-down list: Circle, Pins, Squares, Diamonds, or Dynamic Pins.

    • Bubble: Displays the values of two different metrics for each location in your data using bubbles. One metric determines the bubble color, and the other specifies the bubble size. Set the size of the bubbles:

      • Max size: Select Automatic to allow StrategyWorkstation to automatically determine the maximum size of the bubbles. Select Manual to enter a maximum bubble size as a ration between 0.01 - 1.0.

      • Min size: (Available if the Size By area of the Editor panel contains a metric.) Select Proportional to allow StrategyWorkstation to determine the minimum bubble size in proportion to the maximum bubble size. Select Full Range to make the smallest marker size fixed, independent of its value. Select Adjusted Range to enter a size for the smallest marker.

    • Area: Displays geographic areas such as countries or states. You can color the areas by the values of a metric. Select the Boundaries, which is the level to use for displaying boundaries on your map. Different levels are used to represent boundaries for states, cities, counties, postal codes, and so on.

  • Enable Clustering: When enabled, markers that are close together display clustered into a circle. Each cluster shows as a separate bubble or marker. The number in the circle indicates how many markers are included in the cluster. Clusters change depending on your zoom level. Double-click a cluster to zoom in and display the individual markers or bubbles in the cluster. (Available for marker and bubble maps.) You can specify:

    • Zoom Level for Clustering: Use the slider to specify the zoom level for clustering, from World to Street level.

    • Radius of the cluster.

  • Data Labels: Display or hide data labels, which display over the markers, bubbles, or areas. You can choose to:

    • Text: Display the attribute element name associated with each location or marker.

    • Values: Displays the metric values associated with each location or marker.

    • Hide Overlapping Labels to increase readability

Legend Display a legend if you are using thresholds to define colors.

Text and Form

Select options for text and shapes. If the map contains multiple layers, you can format each layer individually by selecting it from the drop-down list.

Data Labels: Display or hide data labels, which display over the markers, bubbles, or areas. (You can also enable or disable data labels in the Visualization Options tab.

  • When enabled, you can select the font size and color.

Shape

  • Threshold: If the map uses thresholds, click the color range to modify the threshold colors and ranges using the Quick Thresholds Editor. Select the opacity for the map shapes. The higher the percentage, the more opaque the map shape.

  • Fill: If the map does not use thresholds, select the fill color and opacity for map shapes. The higher the percentage, the more opaque the map shape.

  • Border: Select the border style and color of map shapes.

Title and Container

The following options are available to format the title, background, and borders in a visualization:

Title

Title Bar: Enable to display the visualization's title.

  • If the title bar is enabled, you can format its fill and font.

Beginning in Strategy One (September 2025), you can display one or two lines in the title bar and personalize action buttons. For steps, see Customize the Visualization's Title Bar.

Container

Fill: Select the background color of the visualization from the palette.

Border: Select the style and color of the visualization's borders from the drop-down lists.

  • Beginning in Strategy One (September 2025), you can adjust the Radius of rounded corners for the container.

    • Use a number between 0 and 40.

    • If the current Padding is less than 50% of the updated Radius, Padding automatically increases to match 50% of the new Radius.
