Search for Objects dialog box: Search Options

The Search Options dialog box allows you to:

  • Hide or show the Contains tab and  Contained By tab of the Search for Objects dialog box.

  • Change whether to include hidden objects, managed objects, and shortcut objects in the search results.

  • Change the display settings for the search results window of the Search for Objects dialog box.

The Search Options dialog box is only available if you are searching for either application objects or public objects. If you are searching for configuration objects, by accessing the Search for Objects dialog box from the Search for Configuration Objects option in the Administration menu, you cannot change the search options.

Searching shortcuts

By default, shortcuts are resolved to their target objects, that is, search criteria is applied to the target of a shortcut, rather than the shortcut directly. To treat shortcuts as independent objects, and apply the search criteria to the shortcut directly, clear the Resolve shortcuts to target objects check box on the Search Options dialog box. (A shortcut object is a link to another object such as a report, filter, metric, and so forth. The shortcut objects are easy pointers for navigation.)

If you select the Exclude Folders check box on the Name & Location tab, shortcuts are not resolved to their target objects, regardless of the Resolve shortcuts to target objects setting.

For example, a project contains the Regional Revenue report, and two shortcuts to the report, one named Regional Sales and one named Regional Revenue Shortcut. If you search for objects named Regional Sales and:

  • Resolve shortcuts to target objects is selected, both the shortcut name and the target name (the original report name) of shortcuts are checked against the search term. The Regional Revenue Shortcut is not returned in the search results because neither its shortcut name nor its target name matches the search term. Although the shortcut name of Regional Sales matches the search term, its target name, Regional Revenue, does not match, so this shortcut is not returned in the search results, either.

  • Resolve shortcuts to target objects is cleared, the shortcuts are treated as independent objects, and only the shortcut names are compared with the search term. The Regional Sales shortcut is returned in the search results. Neither the Regional Revenue report nor Regional Revenue Shortcut is returned, because their names do not match the search term.

Name and description search criteria are applied to both the target's and the shortcut's own name and description.

If you search for objects that contain the Regional Revenue report and:

  • Resolve shortcuts to target objects is selected, the shortcuts are resolved to the Regional Revenue report, so the Regional Revenue report is returned in the search results. Since an object cannot contain itself, the shortcuts are not returned in the search results.

  • Resolve shortcuts to target objects is cleared, the shortcuts are treated as independent objects. Since they both contain the report, they are both returned in the search results.

For managed objects, if the Resolve shortcuts to target objects check box is selected, a shortcut to a managed object is resolved as a managed object. If the check box is cleared, a shortcut to a managed object is resolved as a regular object, not a managed object.

To select search options

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Search for Objects. The Search for Objects dialog box opens.

  2. From the Tools menu, choose Options. The Search Options dialog box opens.

  3. By default, the Contains tab and  Contained By tab are not displayed in the Search for Objects dialog box. To display them, select the Show the contains and contained by tabs check box.

  4. By default, hidden objects are not included in the search results. To include them, select the Display hidden objects in the check box.

This setting overrides the hidden objects display setting in MicroStrategy Developer.

  5. By default, a warning message is displayed when the search results exceed 300 objects.

    • To change the number of objects that trigger the warning, type a new number in the Objects field.

    • To turn off the warning, clear the Display a warning message when the search result exceedsa number of objects check box.

  6. By default, managed objects are not included in the search results. To include them, select the Display Managed Objects check box. For example, if you choose to display attributes in the search results, then selecting this check box displays managed attributes, in addition to the other attributes in that project.

    • If you choose to include managed objects, you can choose to include only managed objects in the search results. To do this, select the Display Managed Objects Only check box.

Managed objects are like other MicroStrategy objects, except that they are managed by the system and are stored in a special system folder. For more information, refer to the Freeform SQL Reporting and MDX Cube Reporting chapters in the Advanced Reporting Help.

  7. You can select which columns to display in the search results window. Select any of all of the following:

    • Type

    • Owner

    • Access granted

    • Description

    • Creation time

    • Modification time

    • Path

  8. By default, shortcuts are resolved to their target objects, that is, search criteria is applied to the target of a shortcut, rather than to the shortcut directly. To treat shortcuts as independent objects and apply the search criteria to the shortcut directly, clear the Resolve shortcuts to target objects check box. For examples of how this setting affects searches, see Searching shortcuts above.

  9. Click OK to save the options and return to the Search for Objects dialog box.
