Search for Objects dialog box

The Search for Objects dialog box is a tool that you can use to search for either a specific object or a group of objects meeting certain criteria. This can be a useful way to find and replace privileges. The ability to save search results in a text file can be a good method of tracking changes to a project.

You can select multiple criteria to search for an object (for example, you can look for objects according to their type, the date on which they were last modified, and their primary language). Using more criteria in your search can help restrict the number of results that are returned.

You can search for application or public objects according to one or more of the following:

  • Name and location (for example Mid-Atlantic, located in the folder Region)

  • Object type (for example Attribute, or Metric)

  • Date (or time interval) on which they were created or last modified (for example, all objects modified between 03/22/03 and 04/14/03)

  • Primary language or available language, with the option to apply the search to objects with or without these languages in their descriptions or names (for example, search for all objects with German as their primary language, but without a German description)

  • Owner(s) (for example, Administrator, or John Smith)

  • Other objects they contain (for example, all templates that contain the metric Profit)

  • Other objects that contain them (for example, all metrics that are used by the template Store Sales)

You can search for configuration objects according to one or more of the following:

  • Name and location (for example Mid-Atlantic, located in the folder Region)

  • Object type (for example Attribute, or Metric)

  • Date (or time interval) on which they were created or last modified (for example, all objects modified between 03/22/03 and 04/14/03)

  • Primary language or available language, with the option to apply the search to objects with or without these languages in their descriptions or names (for example, search for all objects with German as their primary language, but do not have a German description)

  • Other objects they contain or that contain them (for example, groups that contain the Administrator user or events that use the Close of Business schedule)

A specific kind of configuration object search is searching for users, groups, and security roles to find and replace privileges. You can search for configuration objects using the same criteria described above. Once the results are displayed, you cannot work with them (for example, save the results in a text file), because the aim of this type of search is to provide results for the find and replace process.

To search for objects

  1. Do one of the following:

    • To search either application objects or public objects, from the Tools menu, choose Search for Objects.

    • To search for configuration objects, from the Administration menu, select Search for Configuration Objects.

    • To search for users, groups, and security roles to find and replace privileges, from the MicroStrategy Developer folder list, expand Administration. Right-click the User Manager folder and select Find and Replace Privileges. Select Use the results of a search and click New. (This type of search is a specific kind of configuration object search.)

    • The Search for Objects dialog box opens.

  2. You can search according to one or more of the following:

  3. Click Find Now to execute the search based on the parameters that you have entered. The search results are listed at the bottom of the dialog box.

  4. If you are searching users, groups, and security roles to find and replace privileges, click OK to return to the Find and Replace Privileges dialog box. Because the aim of this type of search is to provide results to the find and replace process, none of the options described below are available.

  5. You can customize the results window by selecting which columns are displayed in the results window, whether or not to display hidden objects, and whether or not to display managed objects. For instructions, see Search for Objects dialog box: Search Options.

Customizing the results window is not available for configuration object searches.

  6. You can:

    • Right-click any of the objects in the results window and, depending upon the object, you can choose to edit, rename, delete, or translate the object. You may also be able to search for dependents, search for components, or view the properties of the object.

    • Save the search results as a MicroStrategy object, which allows you to use the search results in creating prompts and other objects.

To do this, select Save from the File menu. You can save the search as an object for application and public object searches only.

    • You can also create, edit, or delete multiple search objects at the same time by using a Command Manager script. Command Manager is a MicroStrategy tool designed to automate certain tasks and processes. For more information about Command Manager, including instructions, see the Command Manager chapter of the System Administration Help.

    • Save the search results to a text file, which is one way to keep track of changes to a project. For details about the information that is saved in the text file, see Saving a search to a text file.

To do this, select Export to Text from the Tools menu. The text file is saved by default to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Desktop\SearchResult_<date and timestamp>.txt, where <date and timestamp> is the day and time when the search was saved. For example, SearchResult_022624152554.txt was saved on February 26, 2024, at 15:25:54, or 3:35 PM.

    • Create and print HTML pages containing information such as properties and definitions about the selected objects. Project documentation is available for application and public object searches only.

To do this, select Project Documentation from the Tools menu. The Project Documentation Wizard opens on the Options by Type page.

  7. You can clear all fields from all search tabs, which allows you to begin creating another search. To do this, click New Search, and then click OK at the prompt.

  8. To exit the Search for Objects dialog box, select Close from the File menu. If you have not saved the search results, you are prompted to do so.
