MicroStrategy ONE

Search for Objects dialog box: ID searches

The Search by ID tab allows you to search by an object's ID. This allows you to search for objects when you know their ID. Every MicroStrategy object has a unique ID used to identify that object.

The Search by ID tab is not available when you first access the Search for Objects dialog box. You must select Search by ID from the Tools menu to access this tab.

To search by object ID

  1. Do one of the following:

    • To search either application objects or public objects, from the Tools menu, choose Search for Objects.

    • To search for configuration objects, from the Administration menu, select Search for Configuration Objects.

    • The Search for Objects dialog box opens.

  2. From the Tools menu, select Search by ID. The Search by ID tab opens.

The other Search tabs (such as Date and Contains) are no longer displayed. When you search by ID, you cannot search by other criteria, such as name or modification date.

  3. Type the object ID to search for in the ID field. The IDfield can contain up to 32 characters, and they must be letters and numbers only. (Special characters are not allowed in object IDs.)

  4. By default, the object type is set to Unknown, so that all object types are searched. To select a specific object type to search, select it from the Object Type drop-down list.

  5. Click Find Now to execute the search based on the parameters that you have entered. The search results are listed at the bottom of the dialog box.

  6. You can customize the results window by selecting which columns are displayed in the results window, whether or not to display hidden objects, whether or not to display managed objects, and whether or not to resolve shortcuts to their target objects. For instructions, see Search for Objects dialog box: Options.

Customizing the results window is not available for configuration object searches.

  7. You can:

    • Right-click any of the objects in the results window and, depending upon the object, you can choose to edit, rename, delete, or translate the object. You may also be able to search for dependents, search for components, or view the properties of the object.

    • Save the search results as a MicroStrategy object, which allows you to use the search results in creating prompts and other objects.

To do this, select Save from the File menu. You can save the search as an object for application and public object searches only.

    • Save the search results to a text file, which is one way to keep track of changes to a project. For details about the information that is saved in the text file, see Saving a search to a text file.

To do this, select Export to Text from the Tools menu. The text file is saved by default to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Desktop\SearchResult_date and timestamp.txt, where <date and timestamp> is the day and time when the search was saved. For example, SearchResult_022624152554.txt was saved on February 26, 2024, at 15:25:54, or 3:35 PM.

    • Create and print HTML pages containing information such as properties and definitions about the selected objects. Project documentation is available for application and public object searches only.

    • To do this, select Project Documentation from the Tools menu. The Project Documentation Wizard opens on the Options by Type page.

  8. You can clear the results window, which allows you to begin creating another search. To do this, click New Search and then click OK at the prompt.

  9. To exit the Search for Objects dialog box, select Close from the File menu. If you have not saved the search results, you are prompted to do so.

To close the Search by ID tab and return to the other tabs (such as Date and Owner) of the Search for Objects dialog box, select Search by IDfrom theToolsmenu.
