Search for Dependents dialog box

The Search for Dependents dialog box lets you search for dependents of the selected object by specifying certain criteria. For example, when you select a report and search for its dependents, this dialog box displays all the reports, documents, and other objects that are dependent on the report. Searching for the dependents of an attribute displays the metrics, reports, hierarchy, and other objects dependent on that attribute.

The search results help you view the dependents of an object before you delete the object. You can also select and delete the dependent objects listed in the search results.

You can select multiple criteria to search the dependents (for example, you can look for dependents according to their type, the date on which they were last modified, the owner, and their primary language). Using more criteria in your search can help restrict the number of results that are returned.

To search for dependents

  1. In MicroStrategy Developer, right-click the object to find the dependents of, and select Search for Dependents. The Search for Dependents dialog box opens, listing the dependents of the selected object.

You can also access the Search for Dependents dialog box from the results window of the Search for Objects dialog box. Right-click the object to find the dependents of, and select Search for Dependents.

  2. You can customize the results window by selecting which columns are displayed in the results window, whether or not to display hidden objects, and whether or not to display managed objects. For instructions, see Search for Objects dialog box: Options.

Customizing the results window is not available for configuration object searches.

  3. You can:

    • Right-click any of the objects in the results window and, depending upon the object, you can choose to edit, rename, delete, or translate the object. You may also be able to search for dependents, search for components, or view the properties of the object.

    • Save the search results as a MicroStrategy object, which allows you to use the search results in creating prompts and other objects.

To do this, select Savefrom theFilemenu. You can save the search as an object for application and public object searches only.

    • Save the search results to a text file, which is one way to keep track of changes to a project. For details about the information that is saved in the text file, see Saving a search to a text file.

To do this, select Export to Text from the Tools menu. The text file is saved by default to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Desktop\SearchResult_date and timestamp.txt, where <date and timestamp> is the day and time when the search was saved. For example, SearchResult_022624152554.txt was saved on February 26, 2024, at 15:25:54, or 3:35 PM.

    • Create and print HTML pages containing information such as properties and definitions about the selected objects. Project documentation is available for application and public object searches only.

To do this, select Project Documentation from the Tools menu. The Project Documentation Wizard opens on the Options by Type page.

  4. You can search the dependent objects according to one or more of the following:

  5. You can clear all fields from all search tabs, which allows you to begin creating another search. To do this, click New Search, and then click OK at the prompt.

The dependent objects are removed from the results window. The new search searches the entire project, not just the dependent objects.

  6. To exit the Search for Objects dialog box, select Close from the File menu. If you have not saved the search results, you are prompted to do so.
