MicroStrategy ONE

Search for Objects dialog box: Dependents searches

This tab is only available if you are searching for configuration objects, that is, you've accessed the Search for Objects dialog box from the Search for Configuration Objects option in the Administration menu.

The Dependents tab allows you to search for the following types of objects:

  • Objects that contain other objects

  • Objects that are contained by other objects

  • All objects

These searches are not limited to the current project, but cover the entire metadata configuration.

To search by Dependents criteria

  1. From the MicroStrategy Developer Folder List, select Administration.

  2. From the Administrationmenu, selectSearch for Configuration Objects. The Search for Objects dialog box opens.

  3. Click the Dependents tab.

  4. Select one of the following Search dependency options:

    • To search for objects, such as groups, that contain other objects, such as users, select Search objects that contain selection.

    • To search for objects, such as users, that are contained by other objects, such as groups, select Search objects contained by selection.

    • To search all objects, select Search all.

  5. If you select any Search dependency option other than Search all, Selection type becomes available.

      1. Select an object type from the Selection type drop-down list. The objects of that type are listed below Selection type.

      2. Select the objects that you want to include in the search.

      3. Select either All of the selected objects or At least one of the selected objects.

      4. To search all files and subdirectories within the main search directory, select the Search recursively check box.

  6. A search can contain multiple criteria. For example, you can search for objects based on their type, last modification date, and primary language. Using more criteria in your search can help restrict the number of results that are returned. For instructions to add other criteria to your search, see:

  7. Click Find Now to execute the search based on the parameters that you have entered. The search results are listed at the bottom of the dialog box.

  8. You can:

    • Right-click any of the objects in the results window and, depending upon the object, you can choose to edit, rename, delete, or translate the object. You may also be able to search for dependents, search for components, or view the properties of the object.

    • Save the search results to a text file, which is one way to keep track of changes to a project. For details about the information that is saved in the text file, see Saving a search to a text file.

To do this, select Export to Text from the Tools menu. The text file is saved by default to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Desktop\SearchResult_date and timestamp.txt, where <date and timestamp> is the day and time when the search was saved. For example, SearchResult_022624152554.txt was saved on February 26, 2024, at 15:25:54, or 3:35 PM.

  9. You can clear all fields from all search tabs, which allows you to begin creating another search. To do this, click New Search, and then click OK at the prompt.

  10. To exit the Search for Objects dialog box, select Close from the File menu. If you have not saved the search results, you are prompted to do so.
