MicroStrategy ONE

Search for Components dialog box

The Search for Components dialog box lets you search for components of the selected object by specifying certain criteria. For example, when you select a report and search for its components, this dialog box displays all the attributes, metrics, filters, prompts, and other objects that comprise the report. Searching for the components of an attribute displays the tables, drill maps, and other components of the attribute.

The search results help you view the components of the selected object. You can also select and delete the component objects listed in the search results, if the listed components do not have dependent objects. For more information, see Search for Dependents dialog box.

You can select multiple criteria to search the components. For example, you can look for components according to their type, the date on which they were last modified, the owner, and their primary language. Using more criteria in your search can help restrict the number of search results that are returned.

To search for components

  1. In MicroStrategy Developer, right-click the object to find the components of, and select Search for Components. The Search for Components dialog box opens, listing the components of the selected object.

You can also access the Search for Components dialog box from the results window of the Search for Objects dialog box. Right-click the object to find the components of, and select Search for Components. If you select multiple objects in the results window, the search for components will not return any results. On the Contained By tab of the Search for Components dialog box, select the Search for "contained by" objects recursively check box, and then click Find Now. The components of the objects are now displayed.

  2. You can customize the results window by selecting which columns are displayed in the results window, whether or not to display hidden objects, and whether or not to display managed objects. For instructions, see Search for Objects dialog box: Search Options.

Customizing the results window is not available for configuration object searches.

  3. You can:

    • Right-click any of the objects in the results window and, depending upon the object, you can choose to edit, rename, delete, or translate the object. You may also be able to search for dependents, search for components, or view the properties of the object.

    • Save the search results as a MicroStrategy object, which allows you to use the search results in creating prompts and other objects.

To do this, select Savefrom theFilemenu. You can save the search as an object for application and public object searches only.

    • Save the search results to a text file, which is one way to keep track of changes to a project. For details about the information that is saved in the text file, see Saving a search to a text file.

To do this, select Export to Text from the Tools menu. The text file is saved by default to C:\Program Files\MicroStrategy\Desktop\SearchResult_date and timestamp.txt, where <date and timestamp> is the day and time when the search was saved. For example, SearchResult_022624152554.txt was saved on February 26, 2024, at 15:25:54, or 3:35 PM.

    • Create and print HTML pages containing information such as properties and definitions about the selected objects. Project documentation is available for application and public object searches only.

To do this, select Project Documentation from the Tools menu. The Project Documentation Wizard opens on the Options by Type page.

  4. You can search the component objects according to one or more of the following:

  5. You can clear all fields from all search tabs, which allows you to begin creating another search. To do this, click New Search, and then click OK at the prompt.

The component objects are removed from the results window. The new search searches the entire project, not just the component objects.

  6. To exit the Search for Objects dialog box, select Close from the File menu. If you have not saved the search results, you are prompted to do so.
