Defining a custom subtotal

Custom subtotals offer more control over the display characteristics of a subtotal than the regular subtotal function. They allow you to use different subtotal functions for different metrics on the same display line. You can specify a name for the subtotal, the metrics to be totaled, the function used to calculate each total, and the level of each total. You can also omit totals for particular items.

For information on making the subtotal name dynamic and for an example of a custom subtotal, refer to the Advanced Reporting Help.

To define a custom subtotal

  1. Access the Advanced Subtotals dialog box. (How?)

  2. Click New. The Custom Subtotal Properties dialog box opens.

  3. Enter a name for the new subtotal.

  4. Every metric on the report is listed. Select a metric and use the drop-down list to select the function to calculate that metric's subtotal.

If a metric is in the Report Objects pane but not on the report grid, the metric is not listed in the drop-down list, and therefore the custom subtotal cannot be defined for that metric. If you later move the metric from the Report Objects pane to the report, the custom subtotal cannot be calculated. You must define the custom subtotal for that metric, by returning to the Advanced Subtotals dialog box and selecting the metric.

  5. Click OK. You are returned to the Advanced Subtotals Options dialog box.

  6. Click OK. You are returned to the Subtotals dialog box.

  7. Click OK. You are returned to the report or template.
