Sizing controls on documents

After you add a control (a text field, image, and so on), you can change its size. You can resize it by dragging it in the Layout area or by specifying its height and width. These alternatives are described in the following procedure.

Before you begin

This procedure sizes a single control; see sizing sections and sizing multiple controls for other ways to size document elements.

If a selected control does not resize, it may be locked. A locked control cannot be resized or moved. For more information and instructions, see Locking and unlocking controls.

To size a control

  1. Open the document in the Document Editor. (How?)

  2. Select the control and do one of the following:

    • Size the control on the Layout area: Select the control, and drag any of its red sizing handles to its new size. If you hold down the CTRL key while resizing, snap to grid is temporarily turned off.

If a selected control does not resize, it may be locked. A locked control cannot be resized or moved on the Layout area. For more information and instructions, see Locking and unlocking controls.

    • Resize and move a control so that all corners touch a grid point: Right-click the control, point to Size, then choose To Grid.

    • Specify the height and width of the controls: In the Property List or Properties dialog box, type the Height and Width.

    • Specify the length of a line: In the Property List or Properties dialog box, type the Length.

    • Set whether the height of the control is dynamic or static: In the Property List or Properties dialog box, select one of the following Height mode options:

      • To keep the height from changing from the size set in the Height property, select Fixed.

If you choose Fixed for a Grid/Graph, you can specify that the Grid/Graph is clipped (displaying only what can fit within the size dimensions) when it is exported to PDF and Excel. This is the Grid overflow (PDF and Excel) property.

      • To set the height of a line or rectangle to the height of the document section, select 100%.

      • To expand the height of a text field, a Grid/Graph displayed as a grid, or a selector to the height of the control, select Fit to contents. This mode is ignored in Design View.

Height mode is not available for sections or panel stacks.

    • Set whether the width of the control is dynamic or static: In the Property List or Properties dialog box, select one of the following Width mode options:

To keep the width from changing from the size set in the Width property, select Fixed.

If you choose Fixed for a Grid/Graph, you can specify that the Grid/Graph is clipped (displaying only what can fit within the size dimensions) when it is exported to PDF and Excel. This is the Grid overflow (PDF and Excel) property.

    • To expand the height of a Grid/Graph displayed as a grid to the height of the control, select Fit to contents. This mode is ignored in Design View.

Width mode is available only for rectangles and for Grid/Graphs displayed as grids.

    • Set whether the length of a line is dynamic or static: In the Property List or Properties dialog box, select one of the following Length mode options:

    • To keep the length from changing from the size set in the Length property, select Fixed.

    • To set the length of a line to the length of the document section, select 100%.
