Naming custom group element bands

Steps to name custom group element bands

By default, custom group bands are named Band (1), Band (2), and so on. If you want, you can give a more descriptive name to the bands, since the names are displayed on the report.

For example, you create a custom group banding qualification that shows sales split by percent into five bands (top 20%, next 20%, and so on). By default, the report displays five bands labeled as Band (1) through Band (5). However, it is more meaningful and useful to see the bands labeled as Top 20%, Next 20%, and so on.

You can also rename custom group element headers.

For more information and examples, see the Custom Groups and Consolidations chapter of the Advanced Reporting Help. For more information on banding, see Creating custom group banding qualifications.

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes that the custom group already contains a custom group banding qualification. For instructions on how to create the qualification, see Creating custom group banding qualifications.

To name custom group element bands

  1. Open the Custom Group Editor. (How?)

  2. Right-click the custom group element header (the name, not the qualification) in the Custom Group Definition pane, and select Show Band Names Editor. The Band Name Editor dialog box opens.

  3. Click Add. The first band is added to the Band Names list, with a default name of New Band 1 (Start #1 to End #2).

  4. Type the new name and press Enter.

You can use #1 and #2 as the placeholders for the beginning and ending values of the band. For example, a band starts at 1 and stops at 99. The name Start #1 to End #2 displays as Start 1 to End 99.

  5. For each band in the element, repeat steps 3 and 4.

  6. To change a band name:

    • Select the name in the Band Names list.

    • Click Edit.

    • Type the new name and press Enter.

  7. To remove a band name, select it and click Remove.

  8. To set all band names for this element back to the default, click Remove All. When the custom group is used on a report, the default names display as Band (1), Band (2), and so on.

  9. Click OK. You are returned to the Custom Group Editor.

  10. Save the custom group. (How?)
