When to use custom groups

Use a custom group on a template or report to group attribute elements and filtering criteria for one or more attributes. Typically, a report has one template and one filter. Essentially, a custom group provides a way to get around the one filter limitation and allows you to apply separate filters to the different rows of a single report. Custom groups therefore let you qualify a report on a row-by-row basis.

For example, using a custom group, you can create one report that shows the top ten customers by dollar sales in the first ten rows and the five worst selling items in the last five rows (perhaps to run a promotion offering your best customers a special promotional discount to help sell items that have not sold well recently). In this case, you would create a custom group with two custom group elements, one for your top ten customers and the other for the five worst selling items. You can place this custom group on a report and run it with an empty filter to see the data.
