Drill dialog box

The Drill dialog box allows you to drill on a report component (an attribute, for example) in a particular direction (down, up, and free, which means in any direction). You can override the default settings for keeping the parent and/or thresholds. You can also choose whether to filter the destination report by the current page-by element. You cannot select these options when you drill by right-clicking a report component; they can only be set up using this Drill dialog box.

Drill dialog box contents

The Drill dialog box contains the following options:

  • Selected object: Choose the object on which to drill, or select Free drilling to drill in any direction in the system hierarchy.

  • Drilling options: Select the direction of the drill and the object to drill to.

Depending on the drill map associated with the object, all or some of the following may be listed as directions:

    • Up

    • Down

    • Other directions

For example, you drill on Region using the Tutorial Standard Drill Map. You can drill up to Country, down to Call Center, and in other directions to other hierarchies. If you select an object to drill to from the Other directions category, the report is re-executed with that object added to the report.

  • Keep parent: This option keeps the parent in the destination report. The parent is the object from which you are drilling. Select from the following:

    • Default, to use the drill map's setting.

    • Yes, to keep the parent.

    • No, to remove the parent.

  • Keep thresholds: This option retains thresholds while drilling. Select from the following:

    • Default, to use the drill map's setting.

    • Yes, to keep the thresholds.

    • No, to remove the thresholds.

  • Inherit across-level subtotals from parent: Retains across-level subtotals when drilling. The options are:

    • Default, to use the value set in the drill path.

    • Yes, to display across-level subtotals in the drilled-to report.

    • No, to hide across-level subtotals in the drilled-to report. Across-level subtotals are still displayed unless Keep parent while drilling is set to Noand the user drills from the object that is the level of the subtotal.

  • When drilling, add the current page by element as part of the filter: Select this check box to include the selected page by element in the filter of the destination report. Page by allows you dynamically to select report components as criteria for analysis.

This option is available only if page by is applied to the report.

Accessing the Drill dialog box

  1. Open a report in the Report Viewer (How?)

  2. Select Drill from the Data menu. The Drill dialog box opens.

You can also select an object in the report, then open the Drill dialog box. The object is displayed in the Selected object box of the dialog box. You can also select specific rows or columns by using the Ctrl+ click feature. For example, you select a row on which to drill. You can select an additional row by pressing Ctrl and then clicking on that row. Similarly, you can clear a selected row by pressing Ctrl and then clicking on that row. Only the data from the selected rows appear in the new report.
