Creating a Security Role

Security roles are collections of privileges that can be reused from project to project. Security roles enable you to assign a unique set of privileges to users on a per project basis. Security roles are created and maintained at the project source level and assigned to users at the project level.

For example, you may create a security role that allows a certain set of users to access all the editors except the Attribute Editor. Once you create a security role, you can save it and use it in any project loaded on that Intelligence Server machine, by assigning the security role to a user or to a group of users. The users associated with a particular security role can vary by project.

For more information on security roles, see the System Administration Help.

You can create a security role using the Security Role Manager.

To create a security role

  1. Access the Intelligence Server Administrator page. (How?)

  2. On the Intelligence Server Administrator page, select Security Role Manager. The Security Role Manager opens.

  3. Select the New Security Role icon from the toolbar. The Security Role Editor opens.

  4. On the General tab, type a name and description for your new security role. Make it descriptive enough that other administrators will be able to assign the role knowing what privileges they are making available to the users.

  5. From the Privileges list, select the privileges you wish to include in the security role.

The 'Server Administration' privilege in the Administration section controls whether or not a user can access the Intelligence Server Administrator page. Users that are denied this privilege cannot access any of the tools located within the Intelligence Server Administrator page, including the User Manager and Security Roles Manager.

  6. On the Members tab, select the specific users and groups to assign the security role to. To do this, select the user or group and click > to add it to the Selected list. You can search for a user or group by typing its name in the Search field.

    • Depending on your privileges, you can, from the drop-down menu, select the project for which to apply the security role.

  7. Click OK.
