Subtotal Editor: Layout

The Subtotal Editor interface is very similar to the Metric Editor. The Subtotal Editor contains the following components:

  • On the left side of the dialog box, the Object Browser pane, which provides the means to search for, locate, and select objects within an active project, to use to define the subtotal. The default folder in the Object Browser window is the Public Objects\Metrics folder.

  • Also on the left side of the dialog box, the Shortcut Bar, a customizable pane that contains icons to commonly used folders such as My Personal Objects, Public Objects, and Attributes in the default group displayed as My Shortcuts. You can customize the Shortcut Bar by adding, renaming, and deleting groups and folders.

One of the shortcuts in the Shortcut Bar is Functions and Operators, which contains functions, operators, and plug-in packages. This is the same folder displayed in the Metric Editor. For more information, see Metric Editor Formula tab: Functions and operators

  • Along the bottom, on the left side of the dialog box, a window in which you can specify the name of an object to be used in the definition.

  • On the right side of the dialog box, the definition display, which consists of two windows:

  • The Definition window proper, into which you drop objects you select and drag from the Object Browser to define the subtotal

  • Two buttons, Validate and Clear, which you can use to either accept or discard a definition (validation status is also displayed along the bottom of the Definition window, shown either as a green checkmark, when the metric expression is valid, or a red X, when it is not)

  • Directly atop the Definition window, the operator bar, from which you can select (by clicking the appropriate symbol) one or more operators for the subtotal or access the Insert Function Wizard (by clicking f(x))

  • The breakdown window (under the heading Subtotal (subtotal name) is defined as), which shows the function used for the subtotal and its level (dimensionality)

Identifiers and delimiters

To facilitate recognition and interpretation, the various components of formula definition are color-coded. In addition, each is associated with unique delimiters that clearly show where a component begins and where it ends. The components for a subtotal definition are:

  • The definition, shown in bold black font, which is the subtotal formula

  • The level, or dimensionality, shown in gray, which determines the attribute level at which the subtotal is calculated

The table shows the delimiter used for each component in a subtotal definition.
