Document Editor: Layout area

The Layout area, in the center of the Document Editor interface, provides the framework for precisely controlling where controls (that is, data fields) print on the document. To add data, drag objects from the Datasets pane and drop them into this area. Controls are printed differently depending on what section they are placed in, as described below:

You can expand and collapse a section by clicking the plus and minus signs next to its name. This provides more space as you design the document. Neither process affects the section size or whether controls display when the document is viewed as a PDF.

Changing the size of a section

Clicking and dragging the lower boundary of the section in the Layout area increases the size of the section in both the Design view and PDF view. For more information on changing the section size, see Changing the size of sections in documents.

The Layout area provides an alignment grid to help you control the placement and alignment of controls. You can change the density of the grid in the My Preferences dialog box.

If your layout expands past the width of a single page, a dotted line is displayed to show the page break.

Displaying or hiding a section

By default, all sections are displayed in all views in MicroStrategy Developer and in all modes in MicroStrategy Web. You can select which sections to hide or display in various views. For more information, see Hiding and displaying sections.
