MicroStrategy ONE

Document Editor: Datasets pane

The Datasets pane, on the left side of the Document Editor interface, contains all of the items that can be placed on the document. These items include dataset reports and the objects on them, including attributes, metrics, custom groups, and consolidations from an existing MicroStrategy report, regardless of whether or not they are displayed on the report. That is, if a metric, for example, is in the Report Objects but not displayed on the report grid, that metric is listed in the Datasets pane.

You can drag and drop items from the Datasets pane onto the Layout area to add them to the document. This creates text fields in the Layout area. If you drag and drop a dataset name from the Datasets pane to the Layout area, you create a Grid/Graph.

Dataset is the term used to indicate a report being referenced from a document. Dataset objects are the template units within the reports.

Layout

The top level in the Datasets pane displays reports that are on the document. When the top level is expanded, lower levels display the objects on the dataset, such as attributes, custom groups, consolidations, and metrics. If multiple datasets are included on the document, the grouping and sorting dataset is bolded; all others are secondary. The grouping and sorting dataset is the only dataset that can be used to define the grouping and sorting of the document. For more information on how documents use datasets, see Using datasets in documents.

If the Datasets pane is not displayed, click Datasets at the bottom of the accordion on the left. If the accordion pane is not displayed at all, select Datasets from the View menu.

When you right-click a dataset, you can choose to:

  • Add it to the selected section as a Grid/Graph and retain the dataset's formatting

Only the objects displayed on the grid (versus those in Report Objects but not on the report grid), except for derived metrics, are added to the Grid/Graph. The view filter is ignored. For more information and steps, see Using subset reports as datasets.

  • Add it to the selected section as a Grid/Graph without the dataset's formatting

All the objects in the dataset are displayed on the Grid/Graph. For more information and steps, see Displaying reports in documents: Grid/Graphs.

  • Add it to the selected section as a Grid/Graph linked to the dataset (a shortcut)

Any changes made to the report, such as formatting a metric or changing the graph type, are automatically passed to the Grid/Graph in the document. For more information and steps, see Adding Grid/Graphs as shortcuts linked to reports.

  • Edit the selected dataset

  • Search for dependents of the selected dataset

For instructions to search for dependents, see Search for Objects dialog box: Dependents searches.

  • Check the properties of the selected report

  • Replace it with another dataset

Any Grid/Graphs that use the dataset are updated to use the new dataset instead. For details on how replacing the dataset affects Grid/Graphs and shortcuts that use the dataset, see Replacing datasets in a document.

  • Replace all the datasets on the document with another dataset

For details on how replacing the datasets affects Grid/Graphs and shortcuts that use them, see Replacing datasets in a document.

  • Set the selection as the grouping and sorting dataset

  • Set the join behavior of the dataset as either primary or secondary

The join behavior controls which datasets determine the attribute elements that appear in the document results. All of the elements from primary datasets are displayed in the results. Elements from secondary datasets are displayed only if the element also appears in a primary dataset. This setting does not affect Grid/Graphs. For a description of how primary and secondary datasets are joined, see Using datasets in documents.

  • Delete the selected dataset from the document

  • Insert a new derived metric

A derived metric is obtained dynamically, directly from metrics on a document dataset, by using at least one of the metrics in the document. Derived metrics permit dynamic calculations in a document without requiring new metric definitions.

To add a dataset to the document, use the Add Dataset option on the Data menu.
