Properties and Formatting Dialog Box: Grid

If you arrived here from Workstation, see the Workstation Document Authoring Help.

The Grid section in the Properties and Formatting dialog box lets you choose how to format grid reports in your documents, or change how users drill on a grid or graph. The Grid options are displayed only if a grid or graph is selected. See the options below:

  • Headers: Specify options for displaying row and column headers in a grid.
    • Rows: Determine display options for row headers in the grid.
      • Show: Determine whether to display the row headers in the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
      • Merge: Determine whether to merge row headers that are repeated in the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
      • Lock: Determine whether to prevent the row headers in the grid from being realigned or shifted when the document is run. This checkbox is cleared by default.
    • Columns: Determine display options for column headers in the grid.
      • Show: Determine whether to display the column headers in the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
      • Merge: Determine whether to merge the column headers that are repeated in the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
      • Lock: Determine whether to prevent the column headers in the grid from being realigned or shifted when the document is run. This checkbox is cleared by default.
  • View: Specify general display options for displaying grids in a document, such as whether to apply banding to rows in the grid.
    • Outline: Determine whether to display the selected grid in outline mode. This checkbox is cleared by default. For an example, see How to Group Data by Indenting: Outline Mode on a Report.
    • Show Banding: Determine whether to apply banding to the selected grid once the document is run. This checkbox is cleared by default. For an example, see How to Apply Color Banding to a Report.
    • Show attribute form names: Determine how headers for attributes and attribute forms are displayed in a grid. For example, you can choose to have a header containing the attribute form name automatically displayed above each attribute form shown in the grid, or have a single header automatically displayed for each attribute in the grid, with each header containing only the attribute name. For examples and detailed steps to format attribute and attribute form headers, see the Document Creation Help. The following options are available:
      • Off (default): Select this option to have the attribute name automatically displayed in the header of each attribute in the grid. No attribute form names are included in the grid.
      • On: Select this option to have a header automatically displayed for each attribute form in the grid, with each header consisting of the attribute name followed by the attribute form name.
      • Form name only: Select this option to have a header automatically displayed for each attribute form in the grid, with each header consisting of only the attribute form name.
      • Show attribute name once: Select this option to have a header automatically displayed for each attribute form in the grid and have the attribute name included only in the header for the first attribute form for each attribute. The remaining attribute forms are displayed using the attribute form name only.
      • Automatic: Select this option to automatically display either headers for each attribute or each attribute form depending on the number of attribute forms visible in the grid for each attribute. If only one attribute form is shown in the grid for an attribute, the attribute is displayed with a header containing the attribute's name. If more than one of the attribute's forms are visible in the grid, each attribute form is displayed with a header containing the attribute name followed by the attribute form name.
    • Remove extra column: Determine whether the word Metrics appears as a column or row header on the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
    • Hide Null/Zero toggle behavior: Select this option to determine how MicroStrategy hides null and zero metric values in the grid. For detailed steps, see How to Determine How Null and Zero Metric Values Are Displayed or Hidden in a Grid Report. From the drop-down list, select one of the following:
      • Hide Nulls or Zeros (default): Select this option to hide rows and columns that consist only of null or zero metric values.
      • Hide Nulls Only: Select this option to hide rows and columns that consist only of null metric values.
      • Hide Zeros Only: Select this option to hide rows and columns that consist only of zero metric values.
    • Show thresholds: Determine whether to display thresholds in the selected grid. This option is available only if thresholds have been defined in the grid. This checkbox is selected by default.
  • Drilling: Specify drilling options for a grid or graph.
    • Drill Options: Specify whether users can drill on the selected grid or graph. The drill options are:
      • No drilling: Users cannot drill on the grid or graph.
      • Drill within: Users can only drill on objects that are within the dataset.
      • Drill anywhere (default): Users can drill on attributes other than those available in the dataset.
    • Synchronize the following templates with this object: You can enable users to automatically drill on another grid or graph (the target) when they drill on the grid or graph that is currently selected (the source). For example, a grid containing profit data across several product categories targets a graph displaying inventory data. If a user drills to Subcategory in the grid, the graph will automatically be updated to display inventory data drilled to the Subcategory level. Select grids or graphs from the Available list and click > to add them to the Selected list. When users drill on the source grid or graph, each of the grids or graphs added to the Selected list will also be updated. The Drill Options setting must be set to Drill Within.
  • Incremental Fetch: Incremental fetch divides a large Grid/Graph into pages, thereby loading the data in batches rather than all at the same time. Incremental fetch can help improve performance, especially with very large reports. Incremental fetch is applied when the document is executed in Editable Mode or Presentation Mode in MicroStrategy Web. MicroStrategy Developer does not apply incremental fetch to Grid/Graphs. For more information on incremental fetch for Grid/Graphs, including how incremental fetch is applied to Grid/Graphs that are in repeating document sections, see the Document Creation Help.
    • Enable incremental fetch on grid: Select whether to allow incremental fetch.
    • Count by: Select one of the following:
      • To divide the Grid/Graph by rows, select Individual rows. In the Maximum number of rows per page field, type the maximum number of rows to include on each page.
      • To divide the Grid/Graph by blocks (or groups of data), select Blocks. In the Blocks per page field, type the number of blocks to include on each page.
