Properties and Formatting Dialog Box: Widget
If you arrived here from Workstation, see the Workstation Document Authoring Help.
You can specify display and other options for a report or widget using the Widget options in the Properties and Formatting dialog box.
The Widget options are displayed in the Properties and Formatting dialog box only if you select a grid report, graph report, or widget.

Widget: Determine how a report or widget is displayed.
Widgets are interactive graphs that dynamically update when you select a new set of data to view. Select a widget from the drop-down list to display a report as a specific type of widget. For example, if you have a report and want to convert it into a Heat Map widget, select Heat Map from this drop-down list. The report is converted into a Heat Map widget. Select None to display the report normally.
The report that you turn into a widget must follow the data and template requirements for that type of widget. For example, a Gauge widget requires one attribute on its widget template's rows and one attribute on the columns. Therefore, any report that you convert into a Gauge widget must have the required objects on its template. If it does not, the report is not displayed correctly as a widget. These requirements are detailed in the help topic for each type of widget. For a list of widget types, see Introduction to Providing Analysis and Interactivity: Widgets.
- Alternative Display: Determines
how a widget is displayed if it cannot be displayed as a widget
in a particular display mode. The options are:
Show Grid or Graph: The widget displays as a grid report or a graph report.
When a widget is displayed on a mobile device, only the Show Grid or Graph option is available. If you specify another alternative display option, the widget still displays as a grid report or graph report.
- Show Placeholder: A placeholder displays in place of the widget, with a message stating that the widget cannot be displayed.
- Hide Grid or Graph: The widget is not displayed.
- Display widget in: Determine
whether the widget is displayed as a widget in different display
modes, such as on an iPhone with MicroStrategy
Mobile. Select the checkbox for the display mode in which you
want to display the widget, or clear the checkbox to display
the widget as specified in the Alternative Display option above.
The Will render as column
updates to list how the widget is displayed in each display mode
- Flash (deprecated): Specify how the widget displays in Flash Mode in Web. Flash Mode has been deprecated beginning with 10.1; documents created in earlier versions are displayed in Flash Mode, if that was their default display mode.
- iPhone: Specify how the widget displays on an iPhone with MicroStrategy Mobile.
- iPad: Specify how the widget displays on an iPad with MicroStrategy Mobile.
- Android Phone: Specify how the widget displays on an Android phone with MicroStrategy Mobile.
- Android Tablet: Specify how the widget displays on an Android tablet with MicroStrategy Mobile.
- DHTML: Specify how the widget displays in Presentation Mode in Web.
- PDF: Specify how the widget displays when exported to a PDF document.
- Excel: Specify how the widget displays when exported to an Excel spreadsheet.
- Full Screen: Determine whether to size the widget to take up the entire screen when viewed on the iPhone or Android device. If you choose to display the widget using the entire screen, any additional grids, graphs, or widgets in the document layout will not be displayed.
- Widget Properties: Specify widget options, such as the order in which columns are displayed in an Interactive Grid widget, or how map markers are displayed in a Map widget.
-
Secondary Data Providers: Specify a grid or graph report in the document to use as a secondary data provider for the widget. This option is only available for widgets that use multiple data providers.
If you are incorporating a custom widget into your MicroStrategy Web application and want to make multiple data providers available for the widget, see the MicroStrategy Developer Library (MSDL) for information to expose the Secondary Data Provider area in the Widget tab of the Properties dialog box. This allows users to select more than one data provider for the widget.
- If you are designing a document using a custom widget and you see the Secondary Data Provider area in the Widget tab of the Properties dialog box, contact your customization specialist for information on how to use their custom implementation.
- With the MicroStrategy SDK, you can access additional MicroStrategy widgets, add third-party widgets, and create and use custom widgets. For more information and instructions, see the MicroStrategy Developer Library (MSDL), part of the MicroStrategy SDK.
