Drill on a Document

Drilling is one of the most powerful data analysis functionalities in any reporting environment. Drilling lets you explore data beyond the data immediately visible in a grid or graph report. You can drill through a report to analyze data that is closely related to the original data, or you can expose an entirely different object on a report to see what the data looks like within a different context.

You can drill down to access data at progressively lower levels within a hierarchy. For example, if the attribute level displayed for the Geography hierarchy is Region, drilling down would allow you to see information at the State, City, or Store level. You can broaden the scope of information by drilling up to levels of data increasingly higher within a hierarchy. For example, if Time is shown at the date level, drilling up could display information at the Week, Month, or Quarter level. For detailed examples of drilling in reports, see Drilling Into Related Data on Grids and Graphs.

You can drill on a grid:

  • When you are analyzing the document, in Presentation Mode, if sorting and pivoting have been enabled by the document designer. You can drill along on the default drill path of an attribute. This is defined when a drill map is created by a designer.
  • For steps to enable sorting and pivoting in Presentation Mode, see How to Sort and Pivot in Documents. For background information about drill maps, and steps to create them, see the Drill Maps chapter of the Advanced Reporting Help.
  • When you are editing the document, in Editable Mode. You can drill down, up, or across attributes, custom groups, and consolidations displayed in a report.

In Editable Mode, you can also drill on items in a graph. For a list of the areas on a graph report that you can drill on, see How to Drill on a Graph Report. You can drill on different areas depending on the type of graph that you are working with.

To Drill on a Report in a Document

Sorting and pivoting must be enabled before you can drill on a report in Presentation Mode. For steps to enable sorting and pivoting for Presentation Mode, see How to Sort and Pivot in Documents

Drilling must be enabled for the report. For steps, see Properties and Formatting Dialog Box: Grid.

  1. Open the document in Presentation Mode or Editable Mode. Objects that can be drilled on are displayed with an underline.
  2. To view the destination object of the drill, hover over the underlined object. To drill to that destination, click the underlined object.

If the destination is not a drill, the object is linked to a report or another document. Clicking the object will execute the default link. To drill on this object, hover over the underlined object, click Down arrow, and click the drill.

  3. In Editable Mode, you can also:

    • Drill to other destination objects. Right-click an underlined object on the grid, point to Drill, then select the destination object. To select multiple objects, press and hold CTRL while clicking the objects.
    • Drill on an item in a graph. These items are not underlined. To determine whether an item can be drilled on, right-click the item to check if the Drill option is available. If it is, point to Drill, then select the destination object.
  4. To return to the document, use the MicroStrategy back button.
