How to Use the Drill Panel

The Drill panel is used to drill when DHTML is disabled or when you set up multiple drill paths and view a report once they:

  • Drill from an attribute to its immediate parents or immediate children.
  • Drill from a compound metric to its underlying metrics.

A report designer using MicroStrategy Developer can customize the options that appear for each attribute on the Drill panel, so you might have different drilling options than described here. A Web administrator can also customize drill settings under the Drill Mode page of Project Defaults.

To Drill from One Attribute or Metric

  1. You can only drill down when you drill on one attribute or metric using the Drill panel. To drill in other directions, see the next procedure.
  2. Click the name of a report to execute it. The report must be in either Grid view or Grid and Graph view.
  3. Locate the Drill panel.

  4. Drop-down lists appear under the names of each attribute and drillable metric on the report. Select an object from a To drop-down to drill to that object from the attribute. For example, beneath From: Region, select Country from the To drop-down. This allows you to drill from Region to Country.

    If DHTML is disabled, a checkbox is displayed next to each of the drillable attribute elements and metrics on the grid report itself. You can select these checkboxes to filter based on certain criteria. Select the checkboxes next to the elements from which you want to drill. If you do not select any of the boxes, you drill from all elements corresponding to the selected attribute or metric from which you are drilling.

  5. To also see the parent attributes on the new report, select the Keep parent while drilling checkbox.
  6. Click Apply next to the chosen attribute or metric. A new report is displayed that shows the requested level of detail.

  7. To return to the original report results, click Back Back button above the report.

    Pressing the Back button on your browser does not return you to the original report results.

  8. To drill up and across from one of the attributes or compound metrics, click the More options link next to the attribute or metric.

To Drill from Multiple Attributes or Metrics

The Drill - Advanced panel is displayed when you click one of the More Options links in the Drill panel.

  1. Click the name of a report to execute it. The report must be in either Grid view or Grid and Graph view.
  2. Locate the Drill panel.
  3. Click More options next to the drop-down for the attribute or metric from which you wish to drill. The Drill - Advanced pane is displayed. A new drop-down also appears. It provides a list of the hierarchies to which you can drill from the selected attribute. The area below displays objects within that hierarchy to which you can drill.

  4. From the drop-down, select a hierarchy to which to drill. The hierarchies in the drop-down are updated automatically.

    If DHTML is disabled, you must click the Update button to show the attributes in the chosen hierarchy.

  5. From the area below the drop-down, select the attribute you wish to drill to.
  6. If you want to see the parent attributes on the new report, select the Keep parent while drilling checkbox.
  7. Click Apply. MicroStrategy Web launches a new report that shows the requested level of detail.
  8. To return to the original report results, click Back Back button above the report.

    9. Pressing the Back button on your browser does not return you to the original report results.

  9. To return to simple drilling, click Back to simple drill.
