How to Link a User to a Database User

To allow database authentication, you must link the users in the MicroStrategy environment to warehouse database users. Linking allows Intelligence Server to map a warehouse database user to a MicroStrategy user.

Database authentication identifies users using a login ID and password for the data warehouse database. A warehouse database is associated with each project. In MicroStrategy Developer, when users log in to a Project Source, they are logging in to the Intelligence Server. Because there is no warehouse database associated with the Intelligence Server, there is no authentication by the warehouse at this level. Users are allowed access to the Intelligence Server as anonymous (guest) users so that they can get a list of projects. Therefore, to set up warehouse passthrough, the Intelligence Server must be configured to allow anonymous authentication.

When MicroStrategy Developer users select a project within a project source, they are authenticated against the data warehouse database associated with that project and linked with a MicroStrategy user.

For security reasons, if you use database authentication, you should enable the setting Create caches per database login using the Project Configuration Editor in MicroStrategy Developer. Enabling this setting ensures that users who execute their reports using different database login IDs cannot use the same cache, and therefore cannot see each other's cached reports. For more information about this setting, see the MicroStrategy Developer help (formerly the MicroStrategy Desktop help).

  1. Access the Intelligence Server Administrator page. (How?)
  2. Hover over the Properties column and click Open Intelligence Server Administration Portal .
  3. ClickUser Manager. A list of the user groups that reside on the Intelligence Server appears.
  4. Select the group that contains the user to modify.
  5. In the Actions column, select the Edit icon for the user to modify. The User Editor opens.
  6. On the Authentication tab, type the user's database credentials in the Database login and Databasepassword fields.
  7. Click OK.
