Format: Graph Dialog Box: Format Tab

You can select formatting options for the background, legend, text, and additional items in a graph using the Format tab in the Format: Graph dialog box.

From the first drop-down list, select the general area of the graph that you want to format, such as Titles or Axes. From the second drop-down list, select the specific item in the graph that you want to format, such as Subtitle or Y1 Axis Title. The following options are available:

  • Format: Select this option to format the text, background, frame, or legend of the graph.

    • All Text: Select this option to format the style, size, color, font, and effects applied to all the text in the graph.
    • Background: Select this option to format the fill color and line color of the graph's background.
    • Frame: Select this option to format the fill color and line color of the graph's frame, which is the area within the X-axis and Y-axis in which data is displayed.
    • Legend: Select this option to format the graph's legend. You can format the legend text, as well as the fill color and line color of the text in the legend. For details, see the Graphing chapter in the Advanced Reporting Help.
    • Legend Area: Select this option to format the fill color and line color of the area around the text in the legend.
  • Titles: Select this option to format titles in the graph, such as the title of the category axis.

    You can use a shortcut variable to have information automatically added to titles in the graph. To use a shortcut in a title, select the Show checkbox and enter the shortcut in the corresponding text field. You can use shortcuts in the Subtitle, Footnote, Category Axis Title, Y1 Axis Title, and Y2 Axis Title. Hover over the Details icon The shortcurts are displayed when the cursor is hovered over this Details icon. next to the text field to see the available shortcuts.

    • All Titles: Select this option to format all titles in the graph. Titles include the main title of the graph, subtitles, footnotes, and names for each axis.
    • Title: Select this option to display and format the main title of the graph. Type the title in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
    • Subtitle: Select this option to display and format the subtitle of the graph. Type the subtitle in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
    • Footnote: Select this option to display and format a footnote. The graph's creation date and time is displayed in a footnote by default. You can type a different footnote in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
    • Category Axis Title: Select this option to display and format the title of the category axis (usually the X-axis). Type the category axis title in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
    • Y1 Axis Title: Select this option to display and format the title for the Y1-axis. Type the Y1-axis title in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
    • Y2 Axis Title: (This setting is available only if the graph contains a Y2-axis.) Select this option to display and format the title for the Y2-axis. Type the Y2-axis title in the text field next to the Show checkbox.
  • Axes: Select this option to format the style, size, color, and font used to display text on the axes of the graph.

    • All Axes: Select this option to format all the axes in the graph at once.
    • Category Axis Values: Select this option to display and format the values displayed along the category axis of the graph.
    • Y1 Axis Values: Select this option to display and format the values displayed along the Y1-axis of the graph.
    • Y2 Axis Values: (This setting is available only if the graph contains a Y2-axis.) Select this option to display and format the values displayed along the Y2-axis of the graph.
  • Series Markers: Select this option to format the display of data markers in the graph.

    • All Data Markers: Select this option to format all data markers in the graph.
    • Data Markers for Metric: You can format the data markers for a specific metric. Select the option for the metric that you want to format. For example, to format the data markers for the Profit metric, select Data Markers for Profit.
  • Series Shapes: Select this option to format shapes that are used to represent data in the graph, such as the bars in a Vertical Bar graph or pie slices in a Pie graph.

    Shape for Metric: You can format the shapes used to display data for a specific metric. Select the option for the metric that you want to format. For example, to format the bars displayed for the Revenue metric in a Vertical Bar graph, select Bar Riser for Revenue.

  • Series Values: Select this option to format the data values displayed in the graph.

    • All Data Values: Select this option to display and format the data values for all metrics represented in the graph.
    • Values for Metric: You can format the data values for a specific metric. Select the option for the metric that you want to format. For example, to format the data values for Profit Margin, select Values for Profit Margin.
  • Series Labels: Select this option to format data labels displayed in the graph.

    • All Data Labels: Select this option to display and format the labels for all data displayed in the graph.
    • Labels for Metric: You can format the labels displayed for a specific metric. Select the option for the metric that you want to format. For example, to format the labels displayed for the Sales metric, select Labels for Sales.

Once you have selected the graph item that you want to format, you can format the item using the following options:

The options available may vary depending on the item you choose to format.

  • Format: Select formatting options such as font type, font size, and whether to show tooltips in the graph.

    • Show: Select this checkbox to show the item in the graph that you chose to format in the drop-down lists above. This option is selected by default. If you chose to format titles in the graph, a text field is displayed next to the checkbox. Type the text of the title you want to display.
    • Tooltips: Select the checkbox to show tooltips when a user hovers the cursor over data in the graph. Type the tooltip text you want to display in the field. You can have an automatically generated tooltip displayed by typing {&TOOLTIP} (the default value of the field), type static text, or type a shortcut variable to have your text automatically replaced by a value when the graph is displayed.     • Position: Select the position in which to display the item. For example, you can choose to display a legend to the left or right of a graph.
    • Font: Select a font type in which to display text in the graph.
    • Style: Determine whether the selected text appears in bold, italics, bold italics, and so on, or the style in which to display graph elements, such as a solid or dotted line.
    • Size: Select the font size in which to display text in the graph.
    • Effects: Specify whether the selected text is underlined and/or appears crossed out (Strikeout).
    • Color: Select a color for the selected text or graph element from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors.
  • Fill: Specify the following to determine how the selected graph component, for example, the graph legend or background, is displayed on the graph.

    If DHTML is disabled, you cannot create custom colors or apply gradients, transparency effects, or bevel effects.

    • Color: Specify a color for the background of the selected graph item by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.
    • Transparency: Adjust the transparency of the color using the Transparency slider. As you click and drag the thumb of the slider, a percentage representing the level of transparency is displayed in a tooltip. A low percentage causes colors to appear brighter and more solid (opaque). A high percentage causes colors to appear more faded.
    • Effects: Select a bevel effect, such as Chiseled Edge or Sphere. The Donut and Sphere effects work with circular graph styles (such as a Pie graph), polygonal styles (such as a Radar graph), and rectangular styles (such as a Bar graph). The Smooth and Chiseled Edge effects are not applied to any circular types of graphs.
  • Line: Select formatting options for displaying lines around graph items such as the graph legend, frame, and background.

    Color: Choose the color in which to display the lines by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.

  • Shape: Select formatting options for displaying data markers in the graph, such as which shape to use when displaying data markers.

    • Shape: Select the shape to use when displaying data markers in the graph, such as squares or diamonds.
    • Effects: Select the visual effect to apply to data markers in the graph.
    • Size: Select the size in which to display data markers in the graph.
    • Color: Specify a color in which to display data markers in the graph by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.
    • Transparency: Adjust the transparency of the data markers using the Transparency slider. As you click and drag the thumb of the slider, a percentage representing the level of transparency is displayed in a tooltip. A low percentage causes colors to appear brighter and more solid (opaque). A high percentage causes colors to appear more faded. You can select a specific percentage value by typing the value in the ___% field.
  • Border: Select formatting options for borders displayed around data markers in the graph.

    • Style: Determine the line style with which to display the borders.
    • Thickness: Select the thickness with which to display the borders.
    • Color: Specify a color in which to display the borders by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.
    • Transparency: Adjust the transparency of the borders using the Transparency slider. As you click and drag the thumb of the slider, a percentage representing the level of transparency is displayed in a tooltip. A low percentage causes colors to appear brighter and more solid (opaque). A high percentage causes colors to appear more faded. You can select a specific percentage value by typing the value in the ___% field.
  • Area: Select formatting options for solid areas displayed in the graph, such as the bars in a Vertical Bar graph.

    • Fill Color: Specify a color in which to display areas in the graph by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.
    • Fill Transparency: Adjust the transparency of the areas using the Transparency slider. As you click and drag the thumb of the slider, a percentage representing the level of transparency is displayed in a tooltip. A low percentage causes colors to appear brighter and more solid (opaque). A high percentage causes colors to appear more faded. You can select a specific percentage value by typing the value in the ___% field.
  • Line/Border: Select formatting options for the lines and borders displayed around graph elements.

    • Color: Specify a color for lines and borders in the graph by selecting the color from the drop-down list. You can access additional colors by clicking More Colors. You can apply a color gradient, which is a combination of two colors, by selecting Gradients. In the Gradients dialog box, select the two colors to use for the gradient. Then select a shading style to determine the direction in which the two colors are blended together.
    • Style: Select a line style with which to display lines and borders in the graph.
    • Thickness: Determine the thickness of lines and borders in the graph.
    • Transparency: Adjust the transparency of the lines and borders using the Transparency slider. As you click and drag the thumb of the slider, a percentage representing the level of transparency is displayed in a tooltip. A low percentage causes colors to appear brighter and more solid (opaque). A high percentage causes colors to appear more faded. You can select a specific percentage value by typing the value in the ___% field.
