MicroStrategy ONE

Document Properties dialog box: Document

The Document section of the Document Properties dialog box contains the following properties, which affect the entire document, including all layouts of a multi-layout document:

  • Default grid autostyle: is the report Autostyle object (the Autostyles used in reports) used when a Grid/Graph is added to the document without formatting. See Setting the default grid Autostyle for more information.

  • Available display modes: lists all the modes for MicroStrategy Web. Select the modes that this document can be displayed in; if a check box is cleared, that mode is not available for this document in MicroStrategy Web.

For a brief description of the various modes in MicroStrategy Web, see MicroStrategy Web display modes below.

  • Available export modes: lists the export modes. Select the modes that the document can be exported to.

  • Run by default as: is the mode in which MicroStrategy Web initially opens the document.

  • Always open this document in Full Screen mode: determines whether the document initially opens in Full Screen mode in MicroStrategy Web. Full Screen mode, which is available only in MicroStrategy Web, displays the document without any menus, toolbars, or panels except for a core set of toolbar buttons and the Grouping panel. Full Screen mode allows the user to view more of the document at the same time, which is helpful when analyzing data, as in a Report Services (RS) dashboard that contains multiple dataset reports, sections, and images. For more information, see Uncluttering the RS dashboard display: Full Screen mode.

  • Enable sorting and pivoting on grids in Express and Flash Modes: determines whether users can sort and pivot data on Grid/Graphs in Flash Mode and Express Mode in MicroStrategy Web. Only Grid/Graphs displayed as grids or as both grids and graphs can be sorted and pivoted. Grid/Graphs that contain subtotals cannot be sorted or pivoted.

    • When this check box is selected, a floating toolbar is displayed when a MicroStrategy Web user hovers the cursor over a row or column in the Grid/Graph in Flash Mode. In Express Mode, a context menu is displayed. For examples, see Sorting and pivoting in Grid/Graphs in Flash Mode and Express Mode.

    • When this check box is cleared, the toolbar and context menu are not displayed.

  • Enable additional interactivity on grids in Flash Mode: determines whether users can manipulate data in Grid/Graphs in Flash Mode in MicroStrategy Web. The data manipulations include drilling, running other documents or reports from links, advanced sorting, filtering, grouping, and more, and apply only to Grid/Graphs displayed as grids or as both grids and graphs. For more details on this interactivity, see Enabling filtering, drilling, grouping and moving objects for Grid/Graphs in Flash Mode.

    • When this check box is selected, MicroStrategy Web users can access a context menu when they hover the cursor over a Grid/Graph in Flash Mode. The context menu displays the various data manipulation options.

    • Available only if Enable sorting and pivoting on grids in Express and Flash Modes is selected. If Enable additional interactivity on grids in Flash Mode is selected, the context menu replaces the sorting and pivoting toolbar in Flash Mode only. In Express Mode, the sorting and pivoting context menu is still displayed.

  • Automatically apply selector changes: applies to selectors. By default, it is selected, so that once a user picks an object (button, link, and so on) in the selector, the change is automatically applied to the target of the selector. If multiple objects can be selected, the target is still updated after each individual selection. Therefore, if multiple objects can be selected, clear this check box, allowing the user to choose when to update the target. The user can pick a single object or multiple objects, and then click Apply to update the target. For more information on selectors, see Providing interactivity to users: Selectors.

  • Apply selections as a filter for all new targets: determines whether the items selected in the selector filter or slice the target:

  • The selections made in a filtering selector are used to filter the underlying dataset before the metric values are aggregated at the level of the Grid/Graph that is displayed in the document. To define selectors to filter data, select Apply selections as a filter for all new targets.

The selections made in a slicing selectors are used to determine which slices of data are combined and shown in the Grid/Graph. To define the selector to slice data, clear Apply selections as a filter for all new targets.

For more details on the differences, see Applying selections as filters or slices.

This setting is used to define the behavior of new selector targets, except when the target being added is already the target of another selector that uses the same source. In that case, the target uses the behavior defined in the other selector. For an example, see the Document Creation Help.

  • Document width mode: determines whether the width of the document, as displayed in MicroStrategy Web, is Automatic or Fixed. This property does not affect the document width in MicroStrategy Developer.

  • Show conditional formatting: determines whether conditional formatting is displayed in PDF View.

If you clear this check box, all conditional formatting on all objects is disabled, regardless of whether a specific format was enabled or disabled. If you select this check box, all conditional formatting on all objects is enabled, regardless of whether a specific format was enabled or disabled.

This option can be disabled, to prevent users from toggling conditional formatting off and on. Disabling it can be useful if users should not see certain sections of the document that are displayed or hidden based on conditional formatting. If desired, you can enable it.

  • Watermark: Click Format to create a text or graphic watermark. The Watermark dialog box opens.

Watermarks are faint designs appearing in the background of a page, to typically identify or decorate pages. For more information, including instructions, see Adding watermarks to documents.

If the Format button is not displayed, document watermarks are disabled, which means that the project watermark, if any, is applied to all documents. For instructions to allow a document watermark to overwrite the project watermark, seeEnabling document watermarks.

MicroStrategy Web display modes

Each of the various display modes in MicroStrategy Web are briefly described below; for details, see Viewing and interacting with documents in MicroStrategy Web.

  • Express Mode displays the document results, and allows interactivity with selectors (which can switch panels and update Grid/Graphs), links to reports and documents, and widgets (which present data in a visual and interactive way, such as gauges, time series sliders, and drilling bubbles). You can pivot, sort, and change the view mode of Grid/Graphs. Express Mode provides the best performance of all the modes.

  • Interactive Mode displays the results, but also allows you to manipulate Grid/Graphs with actions such as pivoting and sorting. You can format Grid/Graphs but cannot change the formatting and layout of the entire document. Compared to Editable Mode, Interactive Mode is available to more users and provides slightly better performance. Interactive Mode is optimized for RS dashboard viewing.

  • Editable Mode is similar to Design View. Instead of displaying controls in the Layout area, Editable Mode displays the actual results of the document, while still allowing you to edit the document. Editable Mode offers more functionality than Interactive Mode, since all of the tasks you can perform in Design Mode can also be performed in Editable Mode. However, it is not available to all users, depending on their privileges.

  • Flash Mode is similar to Interactive Mode, but allows you to interact with widgets. You cannot manipulate or format Grid/Graphs, except to sort and pivot objects on them.
