Editing Grid/Graphs in Graph view

Editing a Grid/Graph displayed as a graph provides many of the same options that editing a graph report does. For example, you can change the graph style or the color palette, or format the axis.

Some of the most commonly used options that are available when you edit a Grid/Graph that is viewed as a graph are listed below:

  • Graph style

  • Color palette

  • Legends

  • Graph options such as riser shape, layout type, and location of data labels

  • Axis formatting

  • Titles

These menu options are available in the Graph menu, the same as when you edit a graph report in the Report Editor. These options also apply to the graph part of a Grid/Graph viewed as a grid and a graph. For more information on these graph editing options and others, see Manipulating a graph report.

Editing changes the grid or graph in the document; it does not change the original report. To format the Grid/Graph control within the document, see Formatting Grid/Graphs, which discusses borders, title bars, and quick switch, among other properties.

Prerequisites

This procedure assumes that:

To edit a Grid/Graph in Graph view

  1. If the Grid/Graph is in not in edit mode already, double-click it. A Grid/Graph in edit mode is displayed with a red hashed border.

If the Grid/Graph is a shortcut, you cannot edit it because it is linked to the original report. A message appears, allowing you to choose whether to unlink the shortcut. If you click OK, changes made to the original report are no longer passed to the Grid/Graph in the document.

  2. To format a part of the Grid/Graph, on the Format menu, select the object (such as a riser or label) to be formatted. The Format Objects dialog box opens. After you finish selecting the formatting options, click OK to return to the document. For more information and instructions on formatting these objects, see Formatting individual graph objects.

You can also right-click the object in the Grid/Graph and select Formatting.

  3. To change the graph style, select the new graph style in the toolbar. For more detailed instructions, see Selecting a graph style.

A graph style is the type of graph, such as vertical stacked, horizontal bipolar absolute, and so on. Using a graph style allows you to apply a consistent look and feel to all your reports without having to change the configuration settings one by one.

  4. To change the color palette for the whole Grid/Graph, select the new color palette in the toolbar. For more detailed instructions, see Changing the colors and look and feel of a graph.

When you select a color palette for a Grid/Graph, the colors are changed, but shading and other effects are not applied.

  5. You can select whether to hide or display legends by clicking Show Legends in the toolbar.

The legend defines the colors applied to elements in the Grid/Graph.

  6. To change graph options, such as riser shape, layout type, and the location of data labels, select Graph Options from the Graph menu. The Graph Options dialog box opens. For descriptions of the various graph options, see Formatting the layout, numbers, and appearance of a graph report.

  7. To customize the format of each axis in the Grid/Graph, select Grids and Scales from the Graph menu. The Numeric Axis Grids and Scales dialog box opens. For detailed instructions, see Formatting the axes in a graph report.

  8. To change the titles, which help to clearly identify the Grid/Graph, select Titles and Labels from the Graph menu. The Titles dialog box opens. For further instructions, see Creating titles and labels.

  9. To exit edit mode, click anywhere in the Layout area outside the Grid/Graph object.

This procedure describes the most common graph editing options; it is not an exhaustive list. For more information, see Manipulating a graph report.
