How to Control the Display of Graphs

You can control how graph reports are displayed in MicroStrategy Web. You can determine the following for one or more projects on an Intelligence Server:

  • Size of the graph reports

  • Image format in which the graph reports are displayed

  • Whether the graph report is displayed alongside its corresponding grid report

Only an administrator can choose the image format in which graph reports are displayed. This option is not available in the User Preferences for users.

  1. Log in to a project using an account with administrative privileges.

  2. From the upper right of any page, click the username drop-down and select Preferences. The Preferences page opens.

  3. From the pane on the left, select Project Defaults.

  4. From the pane on the left, select Graph Display. The Graph Display preferences page opens.

  5. In the Graph size area, choose to Use the size settings stored in the report definition or manually set the width and height of the graph by entering numbers in the Width and Height fields.

  6. From the Image format drop-down list, specify an image format in which to display graphs in Web. The image format you choose determines how quickly the graph is displayed, as well as the quality of the images:

    • Use the settings stored in the report definition(default): Specify that graphs are displayed in whatever format they are saved in.

    • BMP: This is the largest image format, so graphs displayed in this format are not displayed as quickly as those in PNG or JPEG format. However, this format is useful for storing high-quality images.

    • JPEG: The JPEG format is smaller than the BMP format, so JPEG images are displayed more quickly. However, JPEG images have lower quality compared to BMP or PNG. This format is useful if the graphs contain gradient effects because gradients are displayed correctly in JPG, without requiring large file sizes.

    • PNG: This image format is a smaller image format than BMP, and offers high-quality images. However, PNG files are generally larger than JPEG files.

Only an administrator can choose the image format in which graph reports are displayed. This option is not available in the User Preferences for users.

  7. To ensure that graph reports are displayed in Grid and Graph view by default, select the Show graph and grid reports by default in 'Grid and Graph' view mode checkbox. This checkbox is cleared by default.

  8. From the drop-down list at the bottom, select one of the following:

    • To apply the changes to the current project, select Apply to current project.

    • To apply the changes to all the projects you have access to that are stored on the Intelligence Server, select Apply changes to all projects on the current Intelligence Server.

  9. Click Apply.
