Assign Geo Roles for Map Visualizations During Import

Geo roles indicate if column contains geographical information, making it easier to display geographical data on map visualizations. When your data includes geographical information, you can display it on a map by assigning geo roles to each column that contains geographical data.

After a data column has been assigned a geo role, you can improve the depth of the geographical information available for your data by having Web automatically generate attributes containing higher levels of geographical data based on the data column.

If a column contains city data, you can have Web automatically generate the State attribute, which contains the state each city is located in.

See the Creating and Configuring a Project section of the Project Design Help for more information about which attributes can be generated for each geo role.

This topic covers assigning geo roles while previewing data during the import data process. After importing data, you can also assign geo roles in map visualizations or while managing dataset objects.

  1. Create a blank dashboard or open an existing one.
  2. Choose Add Data > New Data to import data into a new dataset.

    or

In the Datasets panel, click More next to the dataset name and choose Edit Dataset to add data to the dataset. The Preview Dialog opens. Click Add a new table.

    The Data Sources dialog opens.

  1. Select the data you want to import, according to your data source type.
  2. Once you have selected the data you want to import, click Prepare Data to open the Preview dialog.
  1. In the top pane, right-click the column you want to modify and choose Define Geography.

The Define Geography option is not available for data imported from Hadoop.

  2. Select the geographic type from the drop-down list. If you need to remove the geographic type later, you can select None.
  3. When selecting some geographic types, such as zip codes, checkboxes appear for new attributes you can create (for example, Country, State, Zip Code, etc.). Select the appropriate checkboxes to create additional attributes.
  4. Click OK.
