Create Custom Groups

Starting in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 5, you can create custom groups. Custom groups are a convenient and powerful way to create aggregations or sets of attribute elements in a way that doesn’t exist in the data source; for instance, a new region combining states. Custom groups also provide a way to create automatic groups or bands based on a qualification. Each set in a custom group can have its own filtering, which might be based on other elements, like revenue range and product type for a segmented analysis of high selling electronics.

1. Open the Workstation window.

2. In the Navigation pane, click , next to Objects.

3. Select the environment and project where you want to save your transformation.

4. Click Custom Group and Select.

   

5. To add a custom group element, click Add new element.

6. To delete an element, right-click it and choose Delete. You can multi-select elements for deletion.

7. Complete the definition of the custom group element in Element Type.

   

8. Click here to add a filter element type.

   1. Define a qualification using a custom expression or use the Search box to browse for an attribute.

      

      

   2. If necessary, click New Qualification to combine filters and then change operators.

      

   3. Add additional filters as necessary.

9. Click here to add a banding element type.

   1. Select attribute(s) for the distribution of elements in Distribute elements of attributes in band.

   2. Choose a metric and select Percentage, Rank, or Value banding.

   3. Choose a Banding Type.

      

   4. Set the corresponding criteria.

10. Repeat for as many custom groups as necessary. You can duplicate a custom group element by selecting it and clicking Copy .

    

11. Click Save .
