Adding new dataset reports to Grid/Graph placeholders

A Grid/Graph placeholder is an empty Grid/Graph, without a dataset report to populate the Grid/Graph with data. Use the Pick Dataset dialog box to add any report as the dataset report of the placeholder. The dataset report does not need to be on the document already; if you select a report that is not part of the document, the report is added as a dataset report.

When you add the dataset report, you can decide whether to copy the report's formatting or to use the placeholder's formatting.

To format a Grid/Graph placeholder, populate it with data, format it, and then remove the data. The formatting is retained on the placeholder. To format the rows and columns of the placeholder, you edit the Grid/Graph placeholder and then format it. For more detailed instructions, see Editing Grid/Graphs in Grid view and Editing Grid/Graphs in Graph view.

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes that the document contains a Grid/Graph placeholder. For instructions to add a placeholder, see Adding Grid/Graph placeholders to documents.

To add a new dataset report to a Grid/Graph placeholder

  1. Open the document in the Document Editor. How?

  2. Right-click the Grid/Graph placeholder (an empty Grid/Graph) and select Pick Dataset. The Pick Dataset dialog box opens.

  3. Locate and select the report to provide the data for the Grid/Graph.

You can select a report that is already used as a dataset on the document, or you can select a report that is not included on the document.

  4. By default, the formatting of the original report is copied to the Grid/Graph. Alternatively, the Grid/Graph can use the formatting from the Grid/Graph placeholder. To do this, clear the Use formatting of this report check box.

  5. Click OK to return to the document.

The dataset report is added to the Datasets pane. When the document is executed, the Grid/Graph is populated with data from the selected dataset report.
