Create a Threshold on a Metric Using the Quick Thresholds Editor

You can create a threshold on a metric using the Quick Thresholds Editor.

Your dossier must contain one of the following:

  • A grid visualization with a metric in the Metrics area of the Editor panel.
  • A network visualization with a metric in the Edge Color area of the Editor panel.
  • A graph, heat map, or map visualization with a metric in the Color By area of the Editor panel.
  1. Click on the visualization to which you want to add a threshold.
  2. In the Editor panel, right-click the metric to define a threshold on and choose Thresholds. This is the same metric defined in Prerequisite section above. The Quick Thresholds Editor opens.
  3. If the Thresholds Type option appears, select whether to display your data using colors or images.

Select Color-based to display your data using different colors based on the value of the metric. Then, select a set of colors to apply to the values from the Color drop-down.

  4. If the Thresholds Type option does not appear, select a set of color to apply to the values from the Color drop-down.

The Thresholds Typeoption is shown for visualizations that support replacing metric values with images.

  5. To reverse the order of colors or images that display data within the range, click Reversed.

If small, medium, and large data values appear in green, yellow, and red, selecting Reversed displays the small values in red, medium values in yellow, and large values in green.

  6. Select the metric for defining the threshold from the first Based on drop-down.
  7. To create a threshold based on the value of a metric, select Value from the second Based on drop-down.

You can display metric values greater than five million in blue.

    or

Select Highest to create a threshold based on the top metric values.

You can display the top five metric values in red.

    or

Select Lowest to create a threshold based on the bottom metric values.

You can display the bottom five metric values in green.

    or

Select Highest % to create a threshold based on the top percent of metric values.

You can display the top 10% of metric values with a green arrow.

    or

Select Lowest % to create a threshold based on the bottom percent of metric values.

You can display the bottom 50% of metric values with a red arrow.

  8. If the Break By drop-down appears, select the attribute level to restart counting rank or percent values for the metric. To continue without restarting, select None. This option is only available for thresholds that are based on rank or percent values.
  9. The threshold slider appears at the bottom of the dialog. Each band in the threshold slider represents a different range of metric values. The color or image that appears above the band represents the formatting used to display values that fall within its range. To increase or decrease the range of values covered by the band, click and drag a thumb left or right along the slider.

  10. Click on a thumb to change its location. Double-click the value that appears above the thumb, enter a new value, and press Enter.
  11. If your threshold uses images, rather than colors, go to step 15.
  12. If your threshold uses colors rather than images, you can split a band by right-clicking it and choosing Add Color Band. The band divides into two separate bands.
  13. To change the color applied to the range of values covered by a band, double-click the band, then select the new color from the palette.
  14. To delete a band, right-click it and choose Delete.
  15. To delete a thumb, right-click it and choose Delete.
  16. Click Apply..
  17. Click OK.
