Create an Element Group

You can create an element group by selecting attribute elements from a visualization, to combine multiple elements into one. In a grid visualization, an element group combines rows of data into one row; in a bar graph, an element group combines multiple bars into one bar riser; in a network visualization, an element group combines multiple nodes into one node; etc. The selected elements no longer appear in the visualization.

If your graph visualization displays revenue data from each month in separate bar risers, you can group the months into seasons. Combine January, February, and March into a group named Winter; group April, May, and June into Spring; etc. Bar risers for each month no longer appear; the visualization contains bar risers for the seasons instead.

You can create multiple groups on the same attribute. If a graph visualization contains regions, you can create separate groups for the northern regions, southern regions, and central regions. You can create groups on different attributes, but each group can contain elements from only one attribute.

Element groups are included in grid subtotals, since the element group replaces attribute elements on the visualization.

  1. Open a dashboard

  2. Click the visualization to which you want to add a group.
  3. In the visualization, press and hold the Ctrl key while selecting the attribute elements to add to the group.
  4. Right-click the selected elements and choose Group.

    or

If you choose Group and a Based on list of options appears, you have selected elements from multiple attributes (that is, using a lasso on a heat map visualization). A group can contain only elements from a single attribute. Select the attribute to group from the list.

    The Group dialog opens.

  5. In the Name field, type a name for the group.
  6. Click Save. The group appears in the visualization, replacing the attribute elements you selected.
  7. The new grouped attribute is named AttributeName (Group) by default. You can rename the grouped attribute. Right-click the grouped attribute in the Datasets panel, choose Rename, and enter the new name.
