Template Editor: Template definition area

In the Template Editor, the template definition area is where you specify what objects you want to appear in all reports that will be built based on this template, as well as how you would like the end report to look.

To define the layout of the template, from the Object Browser, drag an object into the Template definition area. A colored line appears in the template indicating where on the template the object will appear: a horizontal line indicates a column, and a vertical line indicates the object will be placed as a row. In general, attributes are placed on the rows and metrics are placed on the columns. Add the desired objects to the rows and columns of the template.

Available dialog boxes

From the Template definition section, you can access the following dialog boxes:

  • Attribute Display. Accessed from the Data menu once an attribute is placed in the Template definition area. From this dialog box you can set the attribute form display options. You can choose to use the attribute's default display settings, which were determined by your project designer, or you can select to use a different attribute form. For example, if the attribute is Employee, the project designer may have selected two forms for this: ID = social security number, and Desc = name. If the project designer set the default form to be ID, and you need to design a report that contains the employee's name, then you use this dialog box to change the attribute form to Desc. For more information, see Attribute Display dialog box.

  • Subtotals. Accessed from the Data menu once a metric is placed in the Template definition area, this dialog box allows you to select a function, such as Average, Median, or Sum, to use for subtotal calculation, and define subtotal display options including how the subtotals are positioned by row or column. For more information on this dialog box, see Subtotals dialog box.

  • VLDB Properties. Accessed by selecting VLDB Properties from the Data menu. VLDB engine-related properties allow you to customize the SQL generation based on your requirements and environment. For more information, see Details for All VLDB Properties.

  • GridOptions. Accessed by selecting Options from the Grid menu. The dialog box allows you to select your banding value options, as well as set your column and outline display. See Grid Options for more information.

  • Report Data Options. Accessed from the Data menu once a metric is placed in the Template definition area. From this dialog box you can set, view, and modify report limits, join types, the evaluation order, subtotals, object alias, object display, null values, and drilling options. See Report Data Options for more information.

  • Object Editors. Accessed by selecting Edit from the Edit menu, opens the associated editor of whatever object you have highlighted in the Template definition area. For example, if you highlight an attribute in the Template and then select Edit, the Attribute Editor opens.
