Working without a connection to a server

Most of the work you do in Command Manager involves a connection to a metadata source. This allows you to execute scripts that affect that metadata. However, you can also open one or more connection-less Script windows. These windows allow you to edit Command Manager scripts but are not connected to a specific metadata source. Some statements, such as LIST SERVERS or START SERVER statements, can be executed without a connection. You can also use the Project source connection management or Narrowcast Server connection management statements to connect to the project source or Narrowcast Server of your choice.

By default, Command Manager scripts are saved as plain text. This may cause a security risk if your scripts contain any connection management statements, as these statements require a user login and a password. To avoid this security risk, you can encrypt your Command Manager scripts that contain passwords. For information about encrypting Command Manager scripts, including instructions, see Encrypting a script.

When you start Command Manager, the Login Dialog Box appears. You can use this dialog box to open a connection-less Script window for project source scripts. If you wish to open a connection-less Script window for Narrowcast Server scripts, click Cancel and then follow the appropriate steps below.

To open a connection-less Script window

  1. On the File menu, point to Connect, and then choose either MicroStrategy Metadata or Narrowcast Metadata, depending on whether you want to work with project source or Narrowcast Server scripts. The appropriate dialog box opens.
  2. Select the Connection-less Session option.
  3. Click OK. A connection-less Script window opens.
