Strategy ONE

Format Panel for Sankey Diagram Visualizations

Once you add a sankey diagram visualization to a dashboard, you can format it.

Beginning in Strategy One (July 2025), you can define dynamic minor values groups based on rank and percentage. This is particularly helpful when a sankey diagram has numerous small-volume flows, which makes it harder to visually identify genuine insights. To reduce this visual noise, you can group low-value flows into a single category. However, this grouping is static, based on absolute minimum and maximum values, and therefore doesn't adapt when users apply filters or change selectors. This leads to inconsistent or misleading visuals, especially in highly interactive dashboards. The new dynamic grouping feature solves this by allowing you to group values based on relative thresholds, such as top N items or bottom X% of values. This ensures the sankey diagram remains clear and focused, no matter how the underlying data changes. It helps users better interpret what's important without being distracted by the noise.

Access

  1. Open an existing dashboard that contains a sankey diagram visualization.
  2. Select the entire visualization or just the area you want to format.
  3. In the left toolbar, click Format .

Visualization Options

Template Choose to color by node or level and customize the color palette.

Layout Choose node alignment, reverse the graph, show level names, enable vertical scroll, and allow dragging of items.

Total Show totals on labels, adjacent or below the label.

Data Labels Show labels and set their alignment.

Nodes Set the density of nodes.

Minor Values Control the display of minor values on nodes and flows. This allows you to hide values smaller than a set value, as well as group values smaller than a set value. Click Nodes or Flows and then use the following options:

  • To Hide Values Smaller Than, select the check box and then type the value in the box below.

  • To Group values, select the check box and type the group's name in the Label box. Select one of the following:

    • To group using static values, click Value and enter the range in the From and To boxes.

    • To group using rank values, click Rank. From the drop-down list, select Bottom or Except Top, then type the rank in the box. (New for Strategy One (July 2025))

    • To group using percentages, click %. From the drop-down list, select Bottom or Except Top, then type the rank in the box. You can use one decimal place and the value cannot exceed 100. For example, you can group the bottom 20% of values. (New for Strategy One (July 2025))

Text and Form

Select options for text, nodes, and flow.

You can define the font of:

  • Entire graph

  • Data labels (and whether to display them)

  • Total (and whether to display it)

  • Level

For the Node, add colors to define a custom palette that the nodes use.

  • If values are grouped, click Grouped and select the color to use on the group.

For the Flows, you define the color and transparency of the shape. From the drop-down list, select one of the following:

  • Solid; select the color from the Fill drop-down list

  • Color From Source

  • Color From Target

  • Gradient

Container

Select options for the title bar, fill, and border of the visualization container. You can also choose whether to display the title bar.
