MicroStrategy ONE

Exporting filter elements

Exporting filter elements allows you to reuse the elements of an existing filter definition. You can also update the information in the file, then import it into the same filter or create a new one.

Filter elements can only be exported from an attribute form qualification that uses a list. That is, the operator must be Inlist or Not in list, and the filter is qualified on an attribute form, not elements. The items in the list must be separated by a comma, as shown in the example below:

Central,Mid-Atlantic,Northeast

Prerequisite

This procedure assumes that you have not created the filter, and therefore includes the steps to create one that meets the requirements for exporting.

To export filter elements

  1. In MicroStrategy Developer, on the File menu, point to New, and then choose Filter. The Filter Editor opens.

If the New Filter dialog box is displayed, click the Empty Filter icon. If you do not want this dialog box to be shown in the future, select Don't show this dialog in the future. Click OK. For more information, see About object templates.

  2. Double-click in the Filter definition pane. The Filtering Options dialog box opens.

  3. Select Add an Attribute qualification and click OK. The Attribute Qualification pane opens.

  4. Select an attribute in one of the following ways:

    • Type the name of the attribute in the Attribute box and click OK.

    • Click ... (the browse button) to select an attribute from the Attributes folder. Click OK.

    • Drag the attribute from the Object Browser into the Attribute box.

    • Select any form except Elements from the Qualify On drop-down list.

  5. Select In list or Not in list from the Operator drop-down list.

  6. In the List field, type the element IDs, descriptions, or other items, separated by a comma, as shown in the example below:

    Central,Mid-Atlantic,Northeast

You can drag and drop elements from the Object Browser, but you must type a comma between each item. Elements that you drag and drop are enclosed in double quotes. If you export the filter elements to an Excel spreadsheet, the quotes are not exported. If you export the filter elements to a text file instead, the quotes are exported.

  7. Click Export to export the filter elements. The Export Elements to File dialog box opens.

  8. Navigate to the directory in which to save the file.

  9. Type a File Name.

  10. By default, the file is saved as an Excel spreadsheet. To save it as a text file, select Text Files from the Save as type drop-down list.

  11. Click Save to save the export file and return to the Filter Editor.

  12. Click OK to close the Attribute qualification pane.

  13. Save the filter. (How?)
