How to Connect to Databricks

Starting in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 9, Unity Catalog is supported.

Databricks is an open and unified data analytics platform for data engineering, data science, machine learning, and analytics.

After generating a new token, you can import data from Databricks to MicroStrategy.

Generate a New Token

  1. Log into your Databricks workspace
  2. Select your cluster to go to the Clusters management page.
  3. Click the Advanced Options drop-down.
  4. Copy the JDBC URL for later use.

  5. Click the user profile icon in the top right of your workspace.
  6. Click User Settings.
  7. Under the Access Tokens tab, click the Generate a New Token button.

  8. Complete the required fields for the new token.
  9. Click the Generate button.
  10. Copy the generated token for later use.

Connect in MicroStrategy

  1. In MicroStrategy Web, click on the Create button > Add External Data.

  2. Find and select the Databricks connector from the data source list.

  3. In the Select Import Options dialog, select an option and click Next.

  4. Next to Data Sources, click New Data Source to add a new connection.

  5. In the Connections dialog, complete the required fields. Use the JDBC URL and token information retrieved in the Generate a New Token section above.

  6. Click Save.
  7. Connect to the saved Databricks data source and select the tables you want to import.

  8. Prepare the data or click Finish.

    You can now use the saved cube to build dashboards.

Connect Using MicroStrategy ONE Update 12 or Later

  1. In the Navigation pane, click , next to Datasets.

  2. Select Data Import Cube and click OK.

  3. Click , next to Data Catalog.

  4. Find and select the Databricks connector from the data source list.

  5. Type a Name and click Add New Database Login.

  6. In the Add New Database Connection dialog, type a Name and choose a Connection Method.

  7. Use the JDBC URL and token information retrieved in Generate a New Token. In JDBC URL, update jdbc:databricks to jdbc:spark.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Connect to the saved Databricks data source and select the tables you want to import.

  10. Prepare the data or click Finish.

Connect Using MicroStrategy ONE Update 11 and Earlier

  1. In the Navigation pane, click , next to Datasets.

  2. Choose an environment and project.
  3. Find and select the Databricks connector from the data source list.

  4. In the Select Import Options dialog, select an option and click Next.

  5. Next to Data Sources, click New Data Source to add a new connection.

  6. In the Connections dialog, complete the required fields. Use the JDBC URL and token information retrieved in the Generate a New Token section above.

  7. Click Save.
  8. Connect to the saved Databricks data source and select the tables you want to import.

  9. Prepare the data or click Finish.

    You can now use the saved cube to build dashboards.
