Persona-Based Navigation in Workstation

Workstation is an all-in-one tool used by many different personas, such as:

  • Business User: Consumes reports
  • Analyst: Creates reports
  • Data Architect: Creates the data schema
  • Administrator: Manages and monitors the MicroStrategy environment

With each persona having different responsibilities and utilizing different workflows, Workstation can display a customized interface based on each persona's assigned privileges, starting in MicroStrategy 2021 Update 2.

The table below describes the privileges needed to enable each section of the navigation pane on the Workstation window.

Navigation Pane Section Required Privileges
Schema Requires Use Architect Editors to view the Schema section. This provides an overview of the full MicroStrategy schema (lock status, attributes, facts, hierarchies, transformations, and tables).
Objects

At least one of the following privileges is required to display the Objects section. Every object type is listed in the Objects section, but each of the following privileges grant the respective capacity required to use each object's editor:

  • Use Architect Editors: Schema Editor
  • Web use View Filter Editor: Report Filter Editor

  • Web use Filter Editor: Query Filter Editor

  • Web use Prompt Editor: Prompt Editor

  • Use Consolidation Editor: Consolidation Editor

  • Use Search Editor: Search Editor

  • Use Drill Map Editor: Drill Map Editor

  • Use Subtotal Editor: Subtotal Editor

Content Bundles Create and edit content bundles
Users and Groups Create and edit users and groups
Monitors

The privileges for at least one of the monitors below needs to be fully granted to display the Monitors section:

  • Nodes: Administer Environment and/or Monitor Environment (Administer Environment implies Monitor Environment)
  • Services: Administer Environment and/or Monitor Environment (Administer Environment implies Monitor Environment)
  • User Connection Monitor: Monitor Cluster and Monitor user connections
  • Database Connection Monitor: Monitor Cluster and Monitor Database Connection
  • Cube Cache Monitor: Monitor Cluster and Monitor Cubes
  • Project Monitor: Monitor Cluster and Monitor project
Data Sources

Requires all of the following:

  • Create and edit database instances and connections
  • Create and edit database logins
  • Create configuration objects

Certificates

Requires one of the following:

  • Administer Environment
  • Monitor Environment
Licenses

Requires one of the following:

  • Administer Environment
