HypergeometricDistribution

Returns the probability of a given number of sample successes, given the sample size, population successes, and population size. Use this function for problems with a finite population, where each observation is either a success or a failure, and where each subset of a given size is chosen with equal likelihood.

Syntax

HypergeometricDistribution(x, n, M, N)

Where:

x is the number of successes in the sample.

n is the size of the sample.

M is the number of successes in the population.

N is the population size.

Usage Notes

All arguments are truncated to integers.

The following conditions are invalid:

  • Any argument is nonnumeric
  • x < 0 or x is greater than the lesser of n or M
  • x is less than the larger of 0 or (n - N + M)
  • n < 0 or n > N
  • M < 0 or M > N
  • N < 0
