Advanced Options for Exporting to a PDF File

The Advanced Options for Exporting to a PDF File dialog box contains the following tabs:

These options apply to the current template or report, overriding the project level defaults. For information about project-level export options, see My Preferences: Advanced Options for Exporting to a PDF File.

Page

This tab allows you to define the:

  • Orientation: Specifies either Portrait (that is, 8.5" wide by 11" high for letter-sized paper) or Landscape (that is, 11" wide by 8.5" high for letter-sized paper).

Changing the Orientation alters the values for both Width and Height.

  • Paper Size: If you select Custom Paper Size, you can adjust the Width and Height.

If you select a specific paper size (such asLetter), and then adjust theWidthorHeight,Paper Sizeis automatically reset toCustom Paper Size.

  • Scaling: Select one of the following:

    • Adjust to scales the report by the selected percent. Use it to increase or decrease the scale of the report. This setting is the default, with 100% (full size) selected.

    • Fit to scales the report to the selected number of pages. You can set both the number of pages wide, for horizontal scaling, and tall, for vertical scaling.

Fit to ensures that the report fits within the parameters, but does not increase the size of the report. If the report is already smaller than the set width and height, it will not become expanded.

  • Cover page: Select the Print cover details check box to print the report's filter details on the first (or cover) page of the PDF.

Margins

This tab allows you to define the:

  • Left margin: The distance between the left side of the page and the left side of the report

  • Right margin: The distance between the right side of the page and the right side of the report

  • Top margin: The distance between the top of the page and the top of the report

  • Bottom margin: The distance between the bottom of the page and the bottom of the report

  • Maximum Size of the Header

  • Maximum Size of the Footer

Header/Footers

This tab allows you to create customized headers and footers, by adding static text and auto-text. Auto-text, which is essentially a variable, is replaced by the appropriate information when the report is exported. For example, if you insert the auto-text Report Name into the header of a report named Monthly Sales, Monthly Sales is displayed in the header when the report is exported.

  • To create the header, select Header from the Edit drop-down list.

  • To create the footer, select Footer from the Edit drop-down list.

The header/footer contains three sections, represented by the text boxes. The first section is printed on the left side of the header/footer, the second section is printed in the middle of the header/footer, and the third section is printed on the right side. Select a section to add text into.

To add static text to the selected section, type the text in the text box. To insert auto-text, select the auto-text from the Insert Auto-Textdrop-down list. You can combine both static text and auto-text in the same section.

You can format the text by using the toolbar to change the font (font name, size, color, and so on), bold the text, italicize the text, and underline the text. You can also insert an image using the toolbar.

Grid

This tab allows you to print row and/or column headers on each page.

General

This tab allows you to embed fonts in the PDF and generate the graphs as bitmaps.

  • Embed fonts: Allows the fonts used in the report to be embedded in the PDF. This enables the original fonts chosen in the Report Editor to display and print in the PDF, even on machines that do not have the selected fonts installed. This ensures portability of the PDF.

  • Use bitmaps for graphs: Allows you to specify that the graphs are generated in a bitmap (.bmp) format.

If you formatted the background of a graph (using gradients, for example), the background may not be displayed when you export the report to PDF. To ensure the graph's formatted background is displayed in PDF, export the report using MicroStrategy Web with the export option Use bitmaps for graphs setting enabled.
