Designing a Report's Structure: Report Templates

Starting in Strategy One (November 2025), you can create and apply report templates to simplify report creation and ensure consistency among reports.

A report template defines the layout of general categories of information in a report. In a report template, you specify the information that you want to retrieve from your data source and the way that you want the data to display. A report template can also include filter information.

Template Examples

For steps to work with templates, see the following:

To create a report template, you must at least have the following privileges:

  • Web save Templates and Filters

  • Write permission for the report file

Once a template is created or an existing report is set as a template, it displays with a template icon . In the image below, Corporate Format and Product Report are both templates, while Sales Prompted by Day is not.

Once a report is set as a template, it displays in the New Report window. In the example below, the out-of-the-box Blank and Report Builder templates are available, as well as the user-created Corporate Format and Product Report templates.

You can still run a template as a report, as well as use it as a template.

Create a Report Template

  1. In the Library toolbar, click Create New and choose Report.

  2. If you are connected to multiple projects, select the project to create your report in.

  3. Click Blank Report to immediately open Edit mode.

  4. Create the template. You can do any combination of the following:

    • Add objects directly to the report grid.

    • Add objects to the Report Objects pane so users can choose from a curated selection to display on the grid.

    • Add object prompts to the grid so users can select the objects to display on the grid.

    • Format the report.

    Save the Template

  5. In the toolbar, click Save.

  6. In the Name box, type the template name.

  7. Navigate to the location to save the template.

  8. Select the Set as Template check box.

  9. Click Save.

Set an Existing Report as a Template

  • If you are editing the report, do one of the following:

    • To create a copy of the report as a template with a different name, from the File menu, select Save As. Navigate to the location to save the template. In the Name box, type the template name. Select the Set as Template check box. Click Save.

    • To save the report as a template, using the same name, from the File menu, choose Set as Template. Save the report template.

Return a Template to a Report

  • If you are editing the template, from the File menu, choose Unset as Template.

Since it is no longer a template, it no longer displays in the New Report window.
