About drill maps and associations
A drill map determines what happens when you drill on an object in a report. Objects can be associated with drill maps, making them the location where the drill starts. For each object associated with a drill map, at least one drill path is created. The drill path determines what happens when you drill on the object and includes the destination of the drill. The destination can be an attribute, a consolidation, a hierarchy, or a template. For example, the system hierarchy (the default drill map) allows you to drill up from Month to Year, or down to Day, or across to Month of Year (the name of the month).
The Drill Map Editor allows you to create and modify drill maps, including their associations to objects.
You can also access the Drill Map Editor from the editors of other objects, but you can only make changes directly related to that object. This means that you cannot change a drill map's associations, but you can change which drill maps are associated with the selected object. For example, if you are editing the Customer attribute in the Attribute Editor, you can access the Drill Map Editor to:
-
Associate the attribute with an existing drill map, which modifies the drill map's definition
-
Create a drill map specifically for and associated with the attribute, which creates a new drill map
-
Remove the attribute's association with an existing drill map, which also modifies the drill map's definition
These changes are all directly related to the edited object. To modify a drill map's definition beyond what is outlined above, you must explicitly open the drill map and edit it.
