MicroStrategy ONE

Manage Dataset Objects

You can perform the following tasks for managing dataset objects in the Datasets panel:

  • Hide or show dataset objects
  • Rename dataset objects
  • Create a derived metric based on an attribute
  • Create a derived attribute based on a metric
  • Define geo roles for attributes
  • Create a derived attribute with additional time information
  • Replace a dataset object with another dataset object

Manage Dataset Objects in the Datasets Panel

  1. Create a blank dashboard or open an existing one. .
  2. If you import a large amount of data and do not want to remove unnecessary data columns before importing, you can hide the corresponding objects in the dataset. To hide a dataset object, right-click it and choose Hide. Press and hold the Ctrl key to select multiple objects.
  3. To show hidden objects, click More at the top right of the Datasets panel and choose Show Hidden Objects. A pop-up menu of of hidden objects appears, organized by dataset. You can expand or collapse the list of hidden objects. Select the checkboxes that correspond with the objects to want to show and click OK.
  4. To rename a dataset object, right-click it, choose Rename, and enter the new name. The new name appears in the Datasets panel, as well as any visualizations that contain the object. Attributes are renamed across all datasets in the dashboard. Metrics are renamed within the selected dataset.
  5. To create a derived metric based on an attribute, right-click the attribute and choose Duplicate as Metric. A new metric appears that is based on the attribute. If the attribute contains numeric values, the values of the metric are calculated based on the sum of the elements in the attribute. If the attribute does not contain numeric values, the metric is a count metric.
  6. To create a derived attribute based on a metric, right-click the metric and choose Duplicate as Attribute. A new attribute appears that is based on the metric. Each value in the metric appears as a separate element in the attribute.
  7. A geo role associates geographical information (for example, city or longitude) to an attribute, allowing you to integrate the data with a map visualization. To define a geo role for an attribute, right-click it and choose Define Geography. Then, select the type of geographic data the attribute contains from the drop-down list (for example, City, State, Country, etc.). Depending on the type of data, MicroStrategy can generate additional attributes, based on the attribute you are defining, by selecting the corresponding checkboxes. Click OK to apply your changes. See the Creating and Configuring a Project topic in the Project Design Guide for more information about which attributes you can generate for each geo role.
  8. To create a derived attribute with time information, right-click an attribute and choose Create Time Attributes. The attribute must have a date type of Date, Time, or DateTime and contain a date attribute form. Select the checkbox that corresponds with each attribute you want to generate. Click OK to apply your changes.
  9. To replace a dataset object, right-click the object and choose Replace Reference With. Select the checkbox that corresponds with the replacement dataset object. The dataset object is replaced with the selected object in all visualizations and filters on the dashboard.
