Report Editor menu bar options: Filter

Options in this menu allow you to add and modify filtering qualifications for a report.

There are two general types of filters you can use with a report: you can create a filter separately as a stand-alone object, and then use that filter in the report, or you can create a filter directly in the report. A filter created as a stand-alone filter can be used in many different reports. A filter created directly in a report can only be used with that report. For an introduction to filters and prompts, with examples, see the Basic Reporting Help.

  • Add to Report Filter: Enabled after you browse to and select a stand-alone filter in your project. This option adds the selected stand-alone filter to the Report Filter pane. The report's results will be filtered by this stand-alone filter.

  • Report Filter Prompt: Enabled after you browse to and select a stand-alone filter in your project. This option adds the selected filter to the Report Filter pane. The filter is automatically converted to a prompt.

  • Remove Shortcut-to-Filter: Enabled after you select a shortcut-to-a-filter in your Report Filter pane. This option removes the selected shortcut-to-a-filter.

  • Save Filter As:

    • If you have selected a stand-alone filter in the Report Filter pane, this option lets you save the stand-alone filter with a different name, in a different location, or both.

    • If you have selected a filter created directly in the report, this option lets you save that filter as a stand-alone filter. This can be helpful if you create a filter directly in a report and then decide that you would like to use that filter on other reports. If you save the filter as a stand-alone filter, you can then open other reports, navigate to the newly saved stand-alone filter, and use the Add to Report Filter option (described above) to use that filter in other reports.

  • Replace Report Filter with a shortcut to this filter: Enabled after you browse to and select a stand-alone filter in your project. This option removes all filters currently in your Report Filter pane and replaces them with a shortcut to the selected filter.

  • Replace Report Filter with a copy of this filter: Enabled after you browse to and select a stand-alone filter in your project. This option removes all filters currently in your Report Filter pane and replaces them with a copy of the selected filter.

  • Increase/Decrease Indent: Enabled after you select an operator, such as AND, between two filters in the Report Filter pane. The Increase Indent option indents the selected operator as well as the filters immediately above and below that operator.

    • This can be useful to help you organize numerous filters in the Report Filter pane, especially if you use several types of operators. For example, you might leave all AND operators and their related filters in the standard position, and indent all OR operators and their related filters, to help you better understand how several filters will affect the report.

    • Be aware that this option can affect the order in which the MicroStrategy Engine calculates data and the report results that are returned.

  • Move Up/Down: Enabled after you select a filter from among two or more filters in the Report Filter pane. This option lets you move the selected filter up or down in the Report Filter pane. Attribute filters are resolved in the order they appear in the Report Filter pane, from top to bottom. Be aware that this option can affect the order in which the MicroStrategy Engine calculates data and the report results that are returned.

  • Edit: Enabled after you select a filter in the Report Filter pane:

    • If you have selected a stand-alone filter, this option allows you to replace it with a different filter. To edit a stand-alone filter, navigate to the filter itself in MicroStrategy Developer and double-click it to edit it in the Filter Editor.

    • If you have selected a filter created directly in the report, this option allows you to modify the filter's definition. Click Help in the qualification pane that opens, for details on each option.
