Formatting lines using the Property List

The Property List is the most convenient way to format lines, as it contains all the options of the other interfaces, and it appears on the same screen as the Layout area. Its line formatting properties include color, style, and weight. The general and layout properties include the properties that define the line, such as name, position, and length.

To format a line using the Property List

  1. Open the document to be formatted. (How?)

  2. If the Property List is not displayed, select Property List from the View menu.

  3. Select the line to format.

To change the appearance (such as color and weight)

  1. You can change the Name, which identifies the line.

  2. To "float" the line on top of the background, apply a drop shadow:

    • Set Drop shadow to True.

    • Enter the offset of the drop shadow, in points, in Drop shadow depth.

  3. To specify the color of the line, select a new Line color using the Color dialog box.

  4. To determine the direction of the line, set Line orientation to Horizontal (the default) or Vertical.

  5. To specify the type of line, select one of the following in Line style:

    • Solid

    • Dashed

    • Dotted

    • Double

  6. Enter the thickness of the line, measured in points, in Line weight.

  7. To display a pop-up tooltip, enter the text in Tooltip.

  8. To hide the line in PDF view, set Visible to False.

The line is still displayed in Design View.

To change margins

  1. The left margin is the distance between the left edge of the line and the left border of the section. Enter a new number in the Left property.

  2. The top margin is the distance between the top edge of the line and the top of the section. Enter a new number in the Top property.

To change the length

  1. To change the length of the line, enter the new number in the Length property.

  2. To determine whether the length is dynamic or static, set the Length mode. The options are described below:

    • Fixed: The length does not change from the set size.

    • 100%: Expands the line across the section. If the line is vertical, the line height is set to the height of the section.
