Creating custom group shortcut-to-a-filter qualifications

Just as you can use a shortcut to a filter in another filter or in a report, you can use a shortcut to an existing filter for a custom group element. This allows you to reuse existing filters and further refine the qualifications they provide without changing the original filter definition. This type of qualification is also known as a filter qualification.

For example, the New England region contains the Boston, Providence, and Greenwich stores. The following filters already exist: "New England Stores," "Women's Clothing," and "December 2022". To include sales in the New England stores for women's clothing in December 2022 in a custom group element, create a new qualification for the custom group element, or take advantage of the existing filters and link them together.

You can also create a filter object prompt and use it in a report. For more information refer to Filter object prompts (shortcut to a filter).

Shortcut-to-a-filter qualifications in custom groups are the same as shortcut-to-a-filter qualifications in filters.

Prerequisite

Your project must already contain the filter that will be used as a shortcut. For instructions, see Steps to create a filter.

To create a custom group shortcut-to-a-filter qualification

  1. Open the Custom Group Editor. How?

  2. Double-click in the Custom Group Definition pane. A new custom group element is created, with the default name Custom Group Element. You can rename the custom group element headers.

  3. Double-click Add Qualification in the Custom Group Definition pane. The Custom Group Options dialog box opens.

  4. Select Add a Shortcut to a Filter and click OK. The Shortcut to a Filter pane opens.

  5. To select the filter, do one of the following:

    • Type the name of the filter in the Filter box.

    • Click ... (the browse button) to search for the filter. In the Open dialog box, navigate to the folder that contains the filter, select the filter, and click OK.

    • Drag a filter from the Object Browser into the Filter box.

  6. By default, existing attribute qualifications are merged into the calculation of the shortcut-to-filter qualification. To change this, follow the steps below. For more information, see Merging attribute and metric qualifications in custom groups.

    • Click Advanced. The Advanced Options dialog box opens.

    • Clear the When resolving this qualification in a report, other qualifications will be taken into consideration and merged check box.

    • Click OK to return to the Shortcut to a Filter pane.

  7. Click OK to close the Shortcut to a Filter pane.

  8. Do one of the following:

    • Add more qualifications to the custom group element. Double-click in the Custom Group Definition pane to open the Custom Group Options pane again. These can be any type of qualification except banding qualifications.

If you have multiple qualifications, you can change the operator connecting them. To do this, right-click the operator in the Filter definition area, point to Toggle operator, then select the new operator from the list.

    • Change the name of the custom group element header (recommended), if you did not do this in step 2. How?
    • Return to Creating custom groups to format the custom group element, set the display options, and/or add more custom group elements.
    • Save the custom group. How?
