How to Create MDX Cube Reports

Many companies have stored data that is specifically structured for query, reporting, and analysis, known as a data warehouse, and they also have data stored in an MDX cube source such as SAP Business Intelligence Warehouse (SAP BW), Microsoft® Analysis Services (Analysis Services), or Hyperion® Essbase®. MicroStrategy's Intelligence Server uses MultiDimensional eXpressions (MDX) to concurrently access both the MDX cube source and the data warehouse effectively. For complete details on how MicroStrategy interacts with these 3rd party data sources, see the MDX Cube Reporting Help.

The procedure below shows you how to create an MDX cube report, which is a standard MicroStrategy report that draws its data from one of the data sources described above.

After you create an MDX cube report using your SAP BW data, you can treat the MDX cube report the same as standard MicroStrategy reports. This means that you can use the MDX cube reports as datasets in Report Services documents.

To create a report from a cube source such as Analysis Services, Essbase, or SAP BW, you must have the Web Professional privilege called Web Define MDX Cube Reports. If you are an administrator, see the System Administration Help for details on privileges and how to assign them to users.

At least one MDX cube must be imported into your MicroStrategy project. Importing MDX cubes is often handled by a MicroStrategy architect. For more information on importing MDX cubes into MicroStrategy, see the MDX Cube Reporting Help.

To Create an MDX Cube Report

  1. Log in to a project connected to an MDX cube source.
  2. Click Create on any folder page, point to New Report, and select MDX Cube Report.
  3. Click an MDX cube source.
  4. Click a catalog.
  5. Select an MDX cube.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select attributes, metrics, prompts, hierarchies, and other objects as required from the Object Browser and put them on the report template. Some MicroStrategy objects on MDX cube reports work differently than on standard MicroStrategy reports, as described in the MDX Cube Reporting Help.

  9. Format the report, if needed.
  10. To save your new report, from the Home menu, select Save.
  11. Click OK.
