Republish Datasets

You can ensure that the data in your dashboard is current by updating your imported data by republishing or refreshing your datasets.

Your dataset contains sales information for your department. Your data source is updated every quarter with sales information for the most recent quarter. You can add the most recent sales information to your dataset by republishing your dataset.

You can specify whether new data replaces or adds to your existing data.

Your dataset contains accumulated cost information for your department, while your external data source contains cost information for the most recent month only. You can add cost information for the most recent month to your dataset, without deleting the information for previous months, by adding new data. If the data source contains updates to the data already in your dataset, you can update the existing data and add new data. You can also replace all the data in your dataset with the data from the data source.

If your dataset contains multiple tables, you can select which tables to republish, and how to refresh them (that is, by replacing all the data, adding only new data, etc.).

If you refined your data using data wrangling before you originally imported it, the same process is applied to the data when you republish it. See Refine Data Quality Before Importing for more information.

If you change a text column to all uppercase during data wrangling, the same text column appears as uppercase in the republished data.

When you republish imported data, MicroStrategy Web attempts to automatically update the dataset with new data from the original data source. If MicroStrategy is unable to import data from the original data source, you must re-specify the data source type and select the data you want to import. If a column's name or data type changes or columns are missing since the original import, you must define new data columns as attributes and metrics. MicroStrategy may be unable to import data if the original data source cannot be found or the data was imported using a query that cannot be successfully executed.

To republish a dataset

  1. Open a dashboard without data.
  2. In the Datasets panel, click More to the right of the dataset you want to republish and choose Republish Cube. The Republish dialog opens.

If the Republish Cube option is not available, the dataset may have been imported from a MicroStrategy server and cannot be republished.

  3. Select the checkbox that corresponds with the table or file you want to refresh. To update all tables or files, select the checkbox in the column header.
  4. If your data is in a file uploaded from your computer or network, click Upload. Navigate to and select the file that contains your data and click Open.

    or

If your data was imported by typing or pasting values, click Upload. Review and make changes to the data and click Open.

    or

If your data was imported from a database or an OAuth connection that requires a login, click Input Credentials. Enter your login and password and click OK.

  5. In the Refresh Policy column, for the corresponding data source, select Replace existing data to overwrite your existing data.

    or

Select Update existing data and add new data to update your existing data, as well as add new data that was not previously included.

    or

Select Update existing data to update your existing data.

    or

Select Add new data to retain your existing data without modifying it, as well as adding new data not previously included in your existing data.

  6. Click Refresh. The selected tables or files are republished and the dataset is updated.
  7. If any errors, such as mismatched data types or missing columns, are encountered during the republishing process, a message appears. Follow the directions in the message to fix the errors.
