1 ESRI uses images for the basemap. However, Mapbox uses vector tiles which contribute to a smoother interaction experience across-the-board, especially when zooming.

2 ESRI uses SVG to render shapes. However, Mapbox uses WebGL which can leverage hardware acceleration and is much faster than SVG regarding large data points.
